Lethbridge College is pleased to host a number of ongoing and special events on campus in the coming weeks.

Thursday, Feb. 1, 11 a.m.

Black History Month

  • Black History Month at Lethbridge College begins with a brief kick-off celebration at 11 a.m. in Centre Core. Organized and supported by a group of Afro-Caribbean students, School of Justice Studies instructor Ibrahim Turay and the Lethbridge College Students’ Association, activities will include movies featuring historical figures in black history being shown in the Cave every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the month, starting with Lean on Me. The Buchanan Library will also offer a book and interactive video display through the month. The month’s highlight event will be Feb. 28.

Garden Court lunches

  • This is the last day for Lunch Express in the Garden Court Restaurant. If you’re looking for a quick, tasty lunch prepared by college Culinary Careers students. Call 403-320-3230 for reservations.

Cultural support program

  • Blackfoot Elder Peter Weasel Moccasin will be available at the Niitsitapi Gathering Place (AN1501) for a drop-in cultural support program. International Student Orientation

  • Student Services and International Services at Lethbridge College will hold an International Student Orientation for Winter 2018 in TE1228. This is an opportunity for international students to learn about campus services, meet other students and staff, and enjoy pizza.

 

Friday, Feb. 2, 6:30 p.m.

Roadkill Dinner

  • Diners can feast on wild meat and show their support to outdoor education and sports at the annual Roadkill Dinner in the Cave. Organized by the Lethbridge College Students’ Association Conservation Enforcement Club and the Wildlife Society, the dinner features game meats donated by students and staff who hunt. The meal is prepared by students in the Culinary Careers program. The dinner raises money for the club to send youth to Alberta Hunter Education Instructors' Association (AHEIA) Alford Lake camp where they’ll learn about hunting, outdoors survival and related skills. The society uses its proceeds to support activities and programs for college students. Tickets are $25 for students, $30 for the public and $35 at the door. Friday, Feb. 2

Make Some Noise for Mental Health

  • The Lethbridge Kodiaks are proud supporters of this ACAC conference-wide awareness campaign to break stigmas around mental health. Expect an extra loud crowd thanks to special noise-maker giveaways as the Kodiaks women’s volleyball team takes on Briercrest College at 6 p.m., with the men’s game to follow at 8 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

 

Saturday, Feb. 3

Make Some Noise for Mental Health

  • The campaign resumes on Saturday with Kodiaks volleyball action continuing against Briercrest College. The women play at 1 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium; the men’s game begins at 3 p.m. Later, Kodiaks basketball teams will Make Some Noise against SAIT. The women play at 6 p.m., and the men tip off at 8 p.m.

 

Monday, Feb. 5, 11 a.m. to noon

QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Program

  • QPR stands for question, persuade and refer. The goal of this program is to teach participants the warning signs, clues and suicidal communications of people in trouble and provide the skills needed to act vigorously to prevent a tragedy.

Donor Appreciation Reception

  • Lethbridge College honours the individuals, families, organizations and businesses whose generous support is vital to the success of the college and its students. The reception includes hors d’oeuvres and a program in Garden Court Restaurant, as well as an innovation showcase and campus tours.

LGBTQ+ Club event

  • The LGBTQ+ Club and Lethbridge Pride are collaborating on an event in The Cave. This is a meet-and-greet with panel discussions on topics including queer arts, police involvement in the pride community and queer business. This will be a great opportunity to expand your knowledge of Lethbridge LGBTQ+ organizations.

Career Networking Night

  • School of Business and Administrative Office Professional students will have an opportunity to learn about their industries and build networking skills. The event offers a panel discussion of industry representatives, faculty and alumni, and a question-and-answer session.   • Lethbridge College honours its employees’ dedication and service to the college, colleagues and students at this annual event. The night includes a buffet dinner, presentations to retirees, Employee Excellence award presentations and recognition of employees with five or more years of service. Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m.

 

Friday, Feb. 9

Kodiaks volleyball

  • The volleyball teams are at home to take on SAIT in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. The men’s game starts at 8 p.m.

 

Saturday, Feb. 10, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Lethbridge College Open House

  • The college opens its doors to prospective students from across Western Canada for a day of exploration and discovery. Open House gives students an opportunity to tour campus, talk with faculty or other representatives from programs of interest, explore academic programs, student services, activities and organizations, and visit interactive program areas. Register and attend the open house to be entered in a draw for a $1,500 tuition credit.

 

Saturday, Feb. 10

Kodiaks basketball

  • The teams take on the Ambrose University Lions in basketball action. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. The men’s game begins at 8 p.m. Both games will be held in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

Valentine’s Cake sale

  • Students in the Culinary Careers program will be putting the final touches on Valentine’s Cake orders for pick up by noon Valentine’s Day. Cakes are $15 each and have to be pre-ordered and pre-paid as part of this annual sale. The last day to accept orders is Feb. 12 with pick up by noon Feb. 14. Long Night against Procrastination

  • This event will take place in the Learning Café and Buchanan Library to help students to develop strategies to deal with heavy workloads and to manage stress at this busy time of the semester. In addition to extended hours in the Learning Café and Library, breakout sessions include: reading scholarly journal articles, free massage therapy sessions, stretch breaks, tea and conversation with Indigenous elders and more. Upcycling event

  • SORRY, This event is cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date. The Fashion Design and Sustainable Production program and Environment Lethbridge will lead participants through the process of upcycling, exploring ways to repurpose items on a budget and reducing waste sent to the landfill while creating one-of-a-kind home and fashion items. Students will be helping to lead presentations, brainstorming and idea sharing on how to give an older item new life. Participants can bring an item or photo they want to upcycle and get help planning its transformation. The event will be held in the E.C. Fredericks Theatre (CE1365).
     

Wednesday, Feb. 14, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

tecconnect Challenge

  • The third annual event will give Lethbridge College Multimedia Production students and Digital Communications and Media students an opportunity to create marketing materials and a distribution strategy for an entrepreneur from the tecconnect centre for entrepreneurship and innovation. This year’s entrepreneur is Guillermo Aceytuno, a Lethbridge College alumnus, and founder of OnSite Auto. In advance of Feb. 14, he will meet with students to discuss his company, its challenges and his vision for the future. Students will be put into groups to brainstorm and make a series of pre-pitches to peers and instructors before heading into the intensive five-hour competition, during which they will build media, finalize distribution strategies and their marketing pitches. Between 2 and 4 p.m., students will pitch their plans to a panel of local entrepreneurs who will provide feedback. This competition occurs at tecconnect at 3582 30 St. N., Lethbridge.

  • The academic strategists from the Learning Café will meet with Indigenous students at the Niitsitapi Gathering Place (AN1501). By making a connection in the Gathering Place, a comfortable space created for Indigenous students, the event encourages students to make use of the Learning Café, located in the Buchanan Library, as needed.

An Evening with Sheldon Kennedy

  • Former National Hockey League player and one of Canada’s leading advocates for young victims of sexual abuse, Sheldon Kennedy, will attend a screening of the documentary Swift Current and participate in a question-and-answer session in Lethbridge College IB Theatres. The documentary shares Kennedy’s journey from his time as a teenager who suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of his coach, his courageous decision to come forward with his story and his efforts to help other young victims of sexual abuse through his work with the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary. Admission is free, but you must register in advance to attend. Donations to the advocacy centre will be accepted. His visit to campus is hosted by the Centre for Justice and Human Services.

Kodiaks volleyball

  • The Kodiaks play host to Olds College. The women’s game begins at 6 p.m., and the men tip off at 8 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

 

Saturday, Feb. 16

  • The Kodiaks face Olds College again. The women’s game starts at 1 p.m., and the men start at 3 p.m. in Val Matteotti Gymnasium. The evening will see Kodiaks basketball in action versus St. Mary’s University Lightning. The women tip off at 6 p.m., and the men at 8 p.m.

 

Monday, Feb. 19

Family Day

  • Lethbridge College will be closed for Family Day. Students will be off all week for Reading Week. However, the Physical Education building will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the holiday. The Fitness Centre, squash and racquetball courts, and steam rooms will be open. The gymnasium is closed for the week for some work on the facility.

Radicalization Behaviour Awareness Training

  • SORRY, This event is cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date. John McGill, Lethbridge College Security lead, will present a workshop on Radicalization Behaviour Awareness Training in IB1101. Radicalization is the process by which individuals — usually young people — are introduced to an overtly ideological message and belief system that encourages movement from moderate, mainstream beliefs towards extreme views. This workshop is intended to help post-secondary institutions to prevent radicalization by helping staff identify behaviours associated with the process. SLAMs (quick hits of learning)

  • The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Innovation team will offer quick hits of learning through SLAMs in Buchanan Library. These are three- to five-minute information sessions. Three SLAMs will be shared at the top of every hour. Then participants can spread out in the library to put their learning into action. The time can also be spent visiting learning stations on topics such as assessment, the Canvas learning management system, course design and lesson planning.

 

Wednesday, Feb. 21 and Thursday, Feb. 22

First Responder to Sexual Assault and Abuse Training

  • This two-day course teaches participants how to assess and respond effectively to disclosures of sexual assault and sexual abuse and provide the safety and support survivors need. This is basic yet comprehensive training to “identify, respond and refer,” and is not a course on counselling interventions. Individuals who complete both days receive a provincially recognized certificate. For information on this training, please contact Lethbridge College Health Promotion Coordinator Harmoni Jones.

Mental Health First Aid

  • This two-day course is nationally recognized and regulated through the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Those who complete the program will learn about mental health issues and disorders, strategies for responding to people experiencing mental health issues and resources on campus and in the community to access for support.

Métis training and employment services on campus

  • The Rupertsland Institute mobile employment services unit will be at Lethbridge College. The RV will be parked on the east side of campus, outside the Andrews Building. The portable unit offers training and employment services to Métis students.

What is Resiliency? Am I Resilient? How can I Foster it in Others?

  • This session is part of an ongoing effort to support mental health and foster a healthy campus culture. Participants will learn the characteristics of being resilient, recognize their individual resiliency factors and how to enhance one’s ability to bounce back and how to foster resilience in others and the community.

 

ONGOING EVENTS

Black History Month movie screenings

  • A group of Afro-Caribbean students and the Lethbridge College Students’ Association have teamed up to celebrate Black History Month. On every Tuesday and Thursday in February, movies featuring black actors, historic figures and themes will be streamed throughout the day in The Cave.

 

Evening dining in Garden Court Restaurant

  • Anyone who appreciates a fine meal should reserve a spot for evening dining in the Garden Court restaurant. Dinner reservations are available from 5 to 8 p.m., Feb. 13 to 15, Feb. 27 to March 1. Dates continues in March. Please call 403-320-3230 to reserve.

 

Student success workshops

  • Free Student Success Workshops are offered in the Learning Café (CE1340) throughout the month, except during Reading Week, Feb. 20 to 23. Topics range from writing research papers, reading textbooks, how to tackle multiple choice tests, and managing text anxiety. Information about future workshops can be found online.

 

We’re Calling Because We Care

  • New students can expect a call from Lethbridge College this month, just to check in to see how students are doing and whether they need some help. This might include pointing students to the many services to help support their success.

 

Student Massage Clinic

  • The student massage clinic welcomes new and returning patients. The clinic is open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The clinic is closed for reading week from Feb. 19 to 25. Visit the Lethbridge College Student Massage Clinic now to Feb. 13 and enter a draw for a free 30-minute massage and a special Valentine’s Day prize. All you have to do is attend your appointment and share why you love massage to be entered. The draw will be made Feb. 13. Along with this contest, there’s a buy-one-get-one massage sale now to Feb. 14. Starting Feb. 27 and throughout March, the clinic will be accepting donations to the Lethbridge College Student Food Bank in exchange for $5 off massage.
