Lethbridge College is urging young women to Go Girl! On Saturday, the college’s Be Fit for Life Centre will host Go Girl, an all-day program of physical activities and mentorship sessions, designed to help raise the self-esteem of girls between the ages of eight and 12.

The goal of the free workshop is to help them develop resiliency, avoid peer pressure and empower them to make healthy living choices.

“This is such a crucial age for young girls,” says Alison Pilsner, Be Fit for Life program administrator. “It’s an age where bullying becomes a factor in their lives and self-confidence can become an issue. We want to give them the tools to help them cope and thrive.”

These sessions are designed to provide the 110 participants with leadership skills and creative ways to get physically active. Volunteers and keynote speakers will share their knowledge and experiences and act as positive role models and mentors.

Activities will include Zumba, yoga, nutrition training, cooperative games, physical literacy in sport, trust and team building exercises, as well as body image, mental health and mindfulness seminars.

This year’s event filled up within 36 hours, and Be Fit For Life staff worked to expand the original capacity of the event due to the overwhelming demand. Be Fit For Life staff encourage residents to sign up for their newsletter to ensure they receive notices about future events.
