Lethbridge College is pleased to host a number of ongoing and special events on campus in the coming weeks. 

Members of the media who are interested in covering these events, activities and opportunities, or who are looking for more information, should contact Paul Kingsmith by email ([email protected]) or by phone (403-320-3202 ext. 5211).

Additional opportunities may be announced in the weeks ahead, but we wanted to give the media a sense of some of the events and activities now planned. Thanks for covering the many great events and activities happening at Lethbridge College.

March 1 to 4

  • Championship Weekend. Lethbridge College is proud to host the ACAC Championships Weekend in the city, bringing the best women’s basketball players and indoor track athletes to the city.
     
  • Women’s basketball schedule and details:
    • The ACAC women’s basketball awards banquet will take place on Wednesday, March 1 at the Lethbridge Lodge. The program begins at 7 p.m., with awards to follow around 8 p.m.
    • Thursday, March 2 at 8 p.m.: The top-seeded Kodiaks (ranked second in the country) will meet the Lakeland College Rustlers at 8 p.m. 
    • Friday, March 3: The loser of the Kodiaks’ Thursday game will play at 3 p.m.; the winner of that game will play at 8 p.m.
    • Saturday, March 4: The bronze medal game starts at 4:30 p.m. and the gold medal game starts at 7 p.m.
    • All tournament games will be played at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium and will be available to view live online through ACACTV.
    • Information on tickets can be found online.
       
  • Indoor track schedule and details:
    • Friday, March 3: The first event begins at 5 p.m. Events include the 300m heats and finals; 3000m finals; and 1000m finals.
    • Saturday, March 4: The first event begins at 10:30 a.m. Events including the 600m finals, the 1500m finals and the 4X400m relay.
    • No admission will be charged for The Running Room 2017 ACAC Indoor Track Championships. Limited public seating is available on a first come, first served basis.
    • All events will be held at the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sports and Wellness at the University of Lethbridge.
    • The ACAC indoor track awards banquet will take place at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 4 at the Sandman Hotel, with awards presentations beginning around 3:45 p.m.

Wednesday, March 1, 12:30 to 2 p.m.

  • Overdose Prevention and Take-Home Naloxone Kit Training workshop. This one-hour training session, offered in partnership with ARCHES, provides education on current drug trends, like the fentanyl crisis, and how to identify and prevent an overdose using the Take-Home Naloxone Kit. Participants will gain awareness of the dangers in current drug trends; recognize signs and symptoms of an overdose; demonstrate knowledge of how to respond to an overdose and how to use the Naloxone Kit; and describe safety precautions when responding to an overdose. Thursday, March 2, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • As part of the college’s FNMI Cultural Support Program, Blackfoot Elder Peter Weasel Moccasin will be available to meet with students in the FNMI Student Lounge (AN1501).

Wednesday, March 8, 3 to 4 p.m.

  • LGBTQ Awareness and How to Be an Ally session. The college and the OUTreach of Southern Alberta Community Education Program presents an LBGTQ Awareness and How to Be an Ally session on campus. This session is divided into two main components; Queer 101 focuses on LGBTQ terminology and language, clarifying terms and providing a space for discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity. The second portion of the session will be on what LGBTQ allyship truly means and how to become an ally. The class runs from 3 to 4 p.m. on Monday in CE 1365 (E.C. Fredericks Theatre).

Thursday, March 9, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Thursday, March 9, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • As part of the college’s FNMI Cultural Support Program, Métis Elder Rod McLeodwill be available to meet with students in the FNMI Student Lounge (AN1501). 

Friday, March 10, 11:30 a.m.

  • In an effort to make sure FNMI students are aware and taking advantage of available student awards, an appies and award applications event will take place in the FNMI Student Lounge (AN1501). 

Thursday, March 16, 4 to 6 p.m.

  • FNMI Services hosts the monthly talking circle. This event, involving local Elders, creates a safe and supportive environment for students to talk about issues affecting them. Contact Paul Kingsmith for location details. 

Friday, March 24, 3 to 4:30 p.m.

  • Overdose Prevention and Take-Home Naloxone Kit Training workshop. See details in March 1 description. For more information, contact Harmoni Jones.

Tuesday, March 21, 12:30 to 2 p.m.

  • Question, Persuade and Refer training. The goal of this 1.5-hour training course is to prevent suicide attempts and completions. Participants will learn how to recognize the warning signs of people in trouble and gain skills to act vigorously to prevent a possible tragedy. In addition, they will understand how to recognize someone at risk for suicide; demonstrate increased knowledge of intervention skills; and describe knowledge of referral resources and how to refer someone to help. Thursday, March 23, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • As part of the college’s FNMI Cultural Support Program, Blackfoot Elder Peter Weasel Moccasin will be available to meet with students in the FNMI Student Lounge (AN1501). 

Thursday, March 25, 2 to 3 p.m.

  • As part of a series of webinars and in-person information sessions, Lethbridge College Recruitment will host an info session for those interested in going to college after being away from school for one or more years.

Monday, March 27, 11 a.m. to noon

  • An information session titled “Tips from your friendly librarian” will take place in the FNMI Student Lounge (AN1501).

Wednesday, March 29, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Bridging Cultures will be held in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. All are welcome to come experience food from around the world as well as traditional dance, music, martial arts and more. The event is free and open to the public. Food tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door and available at the LCSA, the Lethbridge College Bookstore and the English Language Centre (AN2730).

Thursday, March 30, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • As part of the college’s FNMI Cultural Support Program, Métis Elder Rod McLeodwill be available to meet with students in the FNMI Student Lounge (AN1501). 

ONGOING EVENTS

Applications for Student Awards accepted starting March 1

  • One simple online application form puts students’ names in the running for all Lethbridge College awards they are eligible to receive. The application can be accessed on the Student Awards page of the college website and takes just a few minutes to complete. The deadline to apply for continuing and graduating students is May 1. The application deadline for entrance students, which includes anyone who is changing programs and anyone who started their program in the January 2017 term, is July 1.

Registration opens March 8 for the Kodiaks 10/4 Road Race

  • Registration will start on March 8 for the 44th annual Kodiaks 10/4 Road Race, which will be held on April 8. New this year is a one-mile kid’s road race.

Student for a day

  • Our student for a day program helps high school students decide which program is right for them. We pair them up with a current student in the program of their choice and they attend classes for the day. We even provide lunch! To sign-up visit: www.lethbridgecollege.ca/student-for-a-day.

Evening Dining in the Garden Court

  • Anyone who loves good food is invited to book a table at the Garden Court for evening dining. Dinner will be available from 5 to 8 p.m. on March 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16. Guests can order off the regular menu or take advantage of the special five-course meal and wine promotion. Items prepared by our second-year Culinary students and instructors include seared scallops with sweet corn bisque, chocolate and espresso beef tenderloin, warm sticky toffee pudding with mango ice cream and deep fried bananas. Student massage clinic

  • The student massage clinic is open with a new group of therapists. The clinic is open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. More information is available online. To book your appointment, call Bonnie at 403-329-7274.   

Friday Entrepreneur Builder series

  • Instructor Cheryl Meheden’s small business management class welcomes entrepreneurs on Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon, including Julia Mitchel, Urban Grover, on March 3; Wally Deruisseaux, Kapow Comics, on March 10; Dallas Harty of Re/Max (formerly of Sobey’s), on March 24; Jason Flatla from Ridgeline Canada on March 31; and Sean Cully from Cully’s Cleaning on April 7. All sessions take place from 11 a.m. to noon in the E.C. Fredericks Theatre. 

Student Success Workshops

  • Lethbridge College offers free Student Success Workshops in the Learning Café, providing instruction and guidance in topics that include studying effectively, writing better research papers, improving memory, effective proofreading, managing test anxiety, advocacy/assertiveness training, taking great notes, managing stress, time management and more.
