Kick off Black History Month

A brief ceremony will be held in Centre Core to kick off Black History Month. A committee of students, staff and the Lethbridge College Students’ Association have planned a number of activities in honour of Black History Month, recognizing the contributions of people of African and Caribbean descent. The month was first recognized by the Canadian government in 1996. Alberta became the fourth province to proclaim February as Black History Month in 2017. Today’s kick-off event will include a brief presentation in Centre Core at 11 a.m. and an invitation to everyone in the college community to wear something that represents their own cultural background, as a show of our diversity. Through the month, watch the LCSA Facebook page for Humans of Lethbridge, profiles of students or staff of African or Caribbean descent.

Special announcement on campus

Minister of Environment and Parks Shannon Phillips will be on campus for a special announcement. This event will be held in the Automotives Shop (TT1975).

Drop-in soccer for Black History Month

As part of Black History Month, staff and students are invited to stop by Val Matteotti Gymnasium for a friendly game of soccer. No previous experience is required.

Massage clinic holds food drive

The Student Massage Therapy Clinic is holding a food drive for the Lethbridge College Students’ Association Food Bank from now to Feb. 13. Clients will get $5 off when they donate a nonperishable food item during this campaign. Regular clinic hours are 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Take a winter walk

Students and staff alike are invited to join Be Fit for Life, the Lethbridge College Students’ Association and Student Services for Winter Walk Day. Interested participants will meet in Centre Core for a 15-minute, outdoor walk starting at 12:10 p.m. After the walk, there will be prizes and free hot chocolate thanks to LCSA.

LGBTQ+ awareness series continues

Students and staff at Lethbridge College are welcome to attend an LGBTQ+ awareness session called Productive Allyship. This session focuses on the power relationships between allies and marginalized individuals. Participants will learn how to begin the process of identifying, evaluating and exercising their privilege in order to work in solidarity with LGBTQ+ individuals and other marginalized groups.

Learn how to manage your student loan

A Lethbridge College’s student awards and financial aid expert will provide students an overview of how student loans, how they benefit those who are struggling financially and how to manage them. This is part of a series of activities during Lethbridge College Poverty Awareness Week. The activities are supported by the Alberta Advanced Education Post-secondary Student Mental Health Grant.

College offers introductory suicide prevention training

Lethbridge College regularly offers Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training to teach members of our college community to recognize warning signs that someone is considering suicide and to intervene to help persuade the person to seek help. Sessions will be offered again in March and April.

Learn how to manage your credit

Mark Kalinowski, a financial educator with the Credit Counselling Society, will present Credit 101, an introduction to how to use credit wisely. This session is part of a series organized by Student Awards and Financial Aid, during the college’s Poverty Awareness Week. This event is supported by the Alberta Advanced Education Post-secondary Student Mental Health Grant.

Free chili lunch for students

The Ecumenical Campus Ministry, with help from Lethbridge College’s Post-secondary Student Mental Health Grant, will provide a free chili lunch to all students from the Centre Core kiosk. A vegetarian option will be available. The lunch is part of the college’s Poverty Awareness Week events.

Fourth annual Biker Buddies event hits Centre Core

Ten teams of cyclists will be pedaling stationary bikes in Centre Core to raise money for student scholarships. This fourth annual Biker Buddies event brings together individuals from across campus to raise pledges. Last year’s event saw cyclists log 2,300 kilometres and raise $6,400. If you’re not pedaling, you can always stop by Centre Core for fruit kebabs or veggie bags for $2 each, make a donation and cheer on teams. The event is able to take donation by debit, credit or cash.

Learn how to eat healthy on a budget

Robyn Jonassen-Armstrong from the Interfaith Food Bank will be on campus to lead a session called Healthy Eating on a Budget. Lunch, an economical taco casserole, will be provided. This session is part of a series of activities during the college’s Poverty Awareness Week. The events are supported by the Alberta Advanced Education Post-secondary Student Mental Health Grant.

Learn first aid for mental health

Lethbridge College staff and students are welcome to enroll in this Mental Health First Aid course. The course outcomes include improving mental health literacy, increasing knowledge of resources on campus and the community, increasing comfort responding to and seeking help for mental health issues and creating an inclusive environment. This workshop is offered seeral other times during the year as a two-day course. The course is nationally recognized by the
Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Black History Month movies in the library

Students and staff are welcome to stop by the Aquarium in the Buchanan Library and pick a movie from a selection of films related to Black History Month. They may feature significant historical figures, relay stories from historical events, or feature groundbreaking portrayals by actors, directors or others.

Kodiaks volleyball action at home

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks will play host to the Red Deer College Kings in volleyball action this weekend. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium, with the men’s action tofollow at 8. Admission is free to college students with student ID, adults are $8, seniors, youth and alumni are $5.

College holds open house for prospective students

Lethbridge College campus will be buzzing for our annual Winter Open House. This event gives prospective students an opportunity to learn more about programs of interest, see campus, and even apply on the spot. Those who attend can have their application fee waived if they apply at open house. Presentations on student awards, financial aid and student services will be provided. There’s even an information session for parents and partners of prospective students. Think of it as taking the college for a test drive.

Kodiaks volleyball plays final home game this season

It’s a rematch of Friday night action as the Lethbridge College Kodiaks volleyball squads take on Red Deer. The women’s game starts at 1 p.m., men at 3 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. Admission is free to college students with student ID, adults are $8, seniors, youth and alumni are $5. This is a last chance to see the Kodiaks volleyball at home this season.
