Champions will be crowned at Lethbridge College in March 2017, as the college will host the ACAC championships in both women’s basketball and indoor track – a rare occurrence being dubbed “championship weekend” at Lethbridge College.

The ACAC women’s basketball championship will run from March 1 to 4 in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. It is the first time that Lethbridge College will host the eight-team event, a format that has been in place in the ACAC since the 2012-13 season. The last time the college hosted the ACAC women’s basketball final was in 2009, when it was played as a final-four format.

This will be the college’s first time hosting the indoor track championships. The event will run on March 3 and 4 at the University of Lethbridge’s First Choice Savings Centre. Indoor track is entering its fourth season as a sanctioned ACAC sport.

“It has been a long time since Lethbridge and southern Alberta has had the opportunity to host a collegiate level championships event, and this year we are thrilled to host two,” says Todd Caughlin, manager of Kodiaks Athletics. “The women’s basketball team and the men’s and women’s indoor track teams are perennial ACAC contenders, so having them compete on home soil is very exciting. It’s an amazing opportunity to showcase Kodiaks Athletics, Lethbridge College and the City of Lethbridge. We can’t wait.”

Championship weekend will provide an exciting finale to the winter sport ACAC seasons that soon kick into full gear. The Kodiaks volleyball teams begin the ACAC season on Oct. 14 when they host Briercrest. The Kodiaks basketball teams get going in ACAC play on Nov. 4 when they welcome SAIT. And the indoor track season will begin in the new year, on Jan. 28 with a meet at MacEwan University.

“What a great time of year,” says Caughlin. “With pre-season action underway in volleyball and basketball, all sports except indoor track are in full swing. The basketball teams look to be contenders once again after good seasons last year. The volleyball teams both welcome new coaching staffs as they look to return to the ACAC championships. It all starts now for the winter sports and we are hoping to see them all fight for their respective ACAC gold medals.”
