Lethbridge College is pleased host a number of ongoing and special events on campus in the coming weeks.

Members of the media who are interested in covering these events, activities and opportunities, or who are looking for more information, should contact Paul Kingsmith by email ([email protected]) or by phone (403-320-3202 ext. 5211).

Additional opportunities may be announced in the weeks ahead, but we wanted to give the media a sense of some of the events and activities now planned. Thanks for covering the many great events and activities happening at Lethbridge College.

Thursday, March 30

  • The Buchanan Library will launch its 25th Food for Fines campaign today at a special event cohosted with the Lethbridge College Students’ Association to help raise awareness about the campus food bank. The event will include free food and prizes. All campus staff, students and community members are invited to participate. Currently, the campus food bank is in need of nonperishable breakfast items, so we will be encouraging in particular the donation of those items, but all donations are welcome and gratefully accepted. The campaign will conclude on Convocation Day, April 28.

Wednesday, April 5

  • Overdose Prevention and Take-Home Naloxone Kit Training workshop. This one-hour training session, offered in partnership with ARCHES, provides education on current drug trends, like the fentanyl crisis, and how to identify and prevent an overdose using the Take-Home Naloxone Kit. Participants will gain awareness of the dangers in current drug trends; recognize signs and symptoms of an overdose; demonstrate knowledge of how to respond to an overdose and how to use the Naloxone Kit; and describe safety precautions when responding to an overdose. Saturday, April 8, 9 a.m.

  • All are invited to participate in the 44th annual Kodiaks 10/4 Road Race. All proceeds from the event support the Kodiaks cross country team. Choose from a 10-mile race, a four-mile race and even a new, one-mile kids’ fun run this year. Family registrations are available.

Monday, April 10 and Wednesday, April 12, 8 to 10:20 a.m.

  • Major capstone projects to be presented by students in the “Systems Analysis and Design” class, which is part of the Computer Information Technology program. Monday’s presentations will be in CB1005 (Westwinds Theatre in the Cousins Building) and Wednesday’s will be in CE1365 (E.C. Fredericks Theatre in Centre Core). All are welcome to attend.

Monday, April 10, 7:30 p.m.

  • The Kodi Awards. Kodiaks fans are invited to attend the third annual Kodi’s awards night, taking place in the Val Matteotti Gym. This high-energy ceremony is styled after the ESPYs and will celebrate the tremendous achievements of Kodiaks athletes this season, including video highlights and several awards presentations. Awards are voted on by athletes and fans prior to the Kodi’s – to fill out a ballot, visit gokodiaks.ca. The event is free for fans and Lethbridge College employees to attend, although a donation to the LCSA food bank is encouraged at the door.

Tuesday, April 11

  • Question, Persuade and Refer training. The goal of this 1.5-hour training course is to prevent suicide attempts and completions. Participants will learn how to recognize the warning signs of people in trouble and gain skills to act vigorously to prevent a possible tragedy. In addition, they will understand how to recognize someone at risk for suicide; demonstrate increased knowledge of intervention skills; and describe knowledge of referral resources and how to refer someone to help.   • Last Day of Classes Feast hosted by Tiana Weasel Moccasin and Samantha Red Crow as part of the FNMI program. Students are welcome to drop in to the FNMI Lounge.

Thursday, April 20, to Wednesday, April 26 (weekdays), 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Student Experience hosts Doggy De-Stress Days in AN1705. Students and staff are invited to stop by and de-stress from exams and the busy time of year with some furry friends.

Friday, April 21, noon to 2 p.m.

  • All are invited to the Multimedia Production program Open House, which will be held in TE3219. Students will be showcasing their capstone projects involving video and motion graphics, web development, interactive design, augmented reality, browser games and e-learning. This hands-on showcase will allow visitors to interact with the projects and ask questions of the students.

Saturday, April 22, 6 p.m.

  • Join us for a fast-paced, high-energy, interactive show at Lethbridge College’s annual Collide-O-Scope fundraiser. Guests at this School of Media and Design showcase will get a close-up look at our students’ work as well as the chance to experience a new mix of virtual and real-world spaces. All proceeds from the event go to support student awards for the School of Media and Design students at Lethbridge College. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. at the Garden Court Dining Room. There will be a cash bar and appetizers. This year’s show will feature an augmented reality portfolio area. Pre-download the Blippar app for this year’s virtual experience.

Thursday, April 27, 4 to 6 p.m.

  • Learn how you can integrate Virtual Reality into your business at Lethbridge College’s VR Business Mixer in the Cave. We will showcase what southern Alberta businesses are doing with the latest VR technology as well as discover how Lethbridge College is integrating Virtual Reality into curriculum. Ticket are $10 and include one drink ticket. Cocktails start at 4 p.m. and the program begins at 4:45 p.m.

Thursday, April 27, 5:30 p.m.

  • Lethbridge College hosts the annual Honouring Excellence alumni awards dinner. The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada, has been named this year’s Honorary Degree recipient at the college and will be recognized at this event. The college will also celebrate the 2017 Honouring Excellence alumni award winners as well: Miles Grove, Distinguished Alumni Award (Environmental Science – Renewable Resource Management, 1989 and Environmental Science – Conservation Enforcement, 1990); J. Scott Barton, Career Virtuoso Award (Recreation Management - Administration, 1985); and Charlton Weasel Head, Community Leader Award (General Studies, 1999). Friday, April 28, 1 p.m.

  • For the 60th time, Lethbridge College will recognize the achievements of its graduates at the annual Convocation ceremony, which will be held at the Enmax Centre. Convocation represents the culmination of a student’s academic endeavours at Lethbridge College. It is an opportunity for the campus community and friends and family to recognize and celebrate student accomplishments. Join us in celebrating convocation by following our social media feeds and sharing content using #lethbridgecollege. We look forward to welcoming the new graduates to our alumni family!

Friday, April 28, 5 p.m.

  • In conjunction with Lethbridge College Convocation, FNMI Services and RBC will host FNMI Honour Night. This evening event allows us to celebrate the accomplishments of our FNMI convocates, while expressing thanks to their families as well as to the services and agencies that have assisted the students in their education journey. The evening’s program will include gift presentations to our convocates, alumni speakers and entertainment. ONGOING EVENTS

Culinary students offer lunch buffets in Garden Court Restaurant

  • Stop by the Garden Court to sample the savory and sweet delights prepared by Culinary Students. Buffets will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and cost $16.75. The food will be planned around a Mexican theme on April 4, 5 and 6; a European theme on April 11, 12 and 13; and a Gala theme on April 18, 19 and 20. To reserve a table, call 403-320-3230.

Applications for student awards accepted through May 1

  • One simple online application form puts students’ names in the running for all Lethbridge College awards they are eligible to receive. The application can be accessed on the Student Awards page of the college website and takes just a few minutes to complete. The deadline to apply for continuing and graduating students is May 1. The application deadline for entrance students, which includes anyone who is changing programs and anyone who started their program in the January 2017 term, is July 1.

Friday Entrepreneur Builder series

  • Instructor Cheryl Meheden’s small business management class welcomes entrepreneurs on Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon, including Jason Flatla from Ridgeline Canada on March 31; and Sean Cully from Cully’s Cleaning on April 7. All sessions take place from 11 a.m. to noon in the E.C. Fredericks Theatre.

Student Success workshops

  • Lethbridge College offers free Student Success workshops in the Learning Café, providing instruction and guidance in topics that include studying effectively, writing better research papers, improving memory, effective proofreading, managing test anxiety, taking great notes, advocacy/assertiveness training, managing stress, time management and more.
