Local youth can discover their inner detective at Lethbridge College this summer as they learn how to survey a crime scene through the eyes of a forensic scientist. The hands-on fun is part of a new summer camp called Forensic Explorers.

You don’t need to have grown up on a farm to forge a successful career in agriculture. Just ask Autumn Barnes, Lethbridge College’s manager of the Integrated Agriculture Technology Centre (IATC), whose curiosity, search for purpose, and post-secondary education have helped her grow within the agriculture community.

Recognizing that language is a key piece of Indigenous culture, Lethbridge College has announced the launch of the Aiitsi’poyoip Blackfoot Speaking Award. Each year, the $1,000 award will be given to five Indigenous students of Blackfoot descent who have participated in the preservation of Blackfoot language and culture. Recipients will be able to demonstrate a proficient ability to speak Blackfoot and/or show a commitment to learn the language.

A new research project at Lethbridge College aims to use cutting-edge near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral imaging technology to test potato quality more quickly in a way that doesn’t destroy good product. Dr. Chandra Singh, who has recently been promoted to Senior Research Chair in Agricultural Engineering and Technology at Lethbridge College, is leading the three-year, $523,300 project.

In the spirit of learning and togetherness, Lethbridge College will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day Tuesday with a full slate of events on campus. Taking place each year on June 21 – the summer solstice – National Indigenous Peoples Day recognizes the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of Canada’s Indigenous peoples.

A new agreement signed by Lethbridge College and SVG Ventures|THRIVE will bring together entrepreneurs, industry experts and researchers to support Alberta’s agriculture sector.

The Progressive Pride Flag is once again flying at Lethbridge College as a show of support for the community’s 2SLGBTQIA+ population. The flag was raised this morning outside of the college’s main entrance.

Second-year Lethbridge College Plumbing apprentice Joshua Mandin needed a little convincing from his uncle, a Carpentry instructor, to try competing for the first time in the Skills Canada Alberta competition in Edmonton in May. “My uncle said it was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss and an experience I’d carry all my life,” Mandin says. So, he signed up – and ended up winning gold medals at both the provincial and national competitions.

Bring on the family fun, food trucks and live music – Coulee Fest is back! After a two-year hiatus, the popular event will return to the Lethbridge College campus Saturday, Sept. 17. Festival goers will be able to enjoy live music, carnival games and other family entertainment, food trucks and beer gardens - even a pie eating contest!

Lethbridge College’s Board of Governors has appointed Dr. Samantha Lenci as interim President and CEO, effective May 27. Lenci has been the college’s Provost and Vice President – Academic since August 2017.
