Civil engineering technologists are the minds that build society’s infrastructure, including roads, urban subdivisions and storm-water systems.

In our TAC nationally-accredited Civil Engineering Technology program, we’ll help you turn your strong mathematical and science skills into the creative yet logical mind of a civil engineering technologist.

Starting with a comprehensive introduction to engineering fundamentals in your first year and developing a practical understanding of engineering design in your second, you’ll become familiar with the latest tools and software in use throughout the industry, including computer-assisted drafting (CAD), architectural engineering and construction (AEC), and geographic information systems (GIS).

Of course, it won’t all be theory and classroom lectures. You’ll use industry-standard computer applications to complete your projects and you’ll even have opportunities to interact with today’s engineering technology professionals. Applied research opportunities will bring your knowledge and hands-on experience together through projects that take you into the field, using data from real sites to develop your personal portfolio.

Camosun College/University of British Columbia

Camosun College in Victoria, BC provides a six-month bridging program leading directly to the third year in Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia. For more information, please visit: learn/programs/engineering-bridge/

Lakehead University

Provides transition courses over the summer; upon successful completion the student can enter the third year of Civil Engineering. A fourth year is also required to obtain a degree.

Lethbridge College

Graduates of Civil Engineering Technology may gain a second diploma in Engineering Design Technology with an additional 1 1⁄2 years of study (course scheduling permitting).

Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)

Graduates of the Civil Engineering Technology diploma program with a minimum grade point average of B- or 2.7 on standard grading scales will be conditionally accepted into the Bachelor of Technology - General program. Applicants for transfer of credit under this Agreement shall complete all of the requested application procedures of NAIT including, but not limited to, written statements outlining personal objectives, career goals, letters of reference, work experience and community involvement, and such other information as may be requested and used by NAIT to determine whether the applicant complies with the requirements as set out or intended.

Royal Roads University

Graduates of the Civil Engineering Technology diploma with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible for a block transfer with the appropriate prerequisite qualification into the third year of the Bachelor of Commerce in Entrepreneurial Management at RRU.

University of Alberta

Civil Engineering Technology diploma graduates with a GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible for up to one year of transfer credit dependent on appropriate grades and program. Delivery Format

A blended course is intentionally designed to include continuum of both face to face/on-campus and online delivery. This includes both synchronous (in real-time on a set schedule) and asynchronous learning strategies (learning that does not occur at the same time or same place). Communication, instruction and assessment components of a blended course provide consistent information but go further by enhancing and supplementing each other. Students may complete some of their lessons online and may also be required to come to campus.


Learning does not occur at the same time or same place. Instructor provides materials including online readings, recorded lectures or presentations, posted lecture notes, video content, assignments and exams for online completion. Students access the course materials within a flexible timeframe prescribed by the instructor.


Learning happens in real time. Student and instructors interact and engage with each other in a specific virtual space, through a specific online medium, at a specific time. This can include video conferencing, live chatting, and live-streaming lectures.

New Students Returning Students
You can expect to experience a blended program. Lectures will occur as scheduled video conferences. Students will have real-time instruction and discussion with faculty and classmates. Lectures will be saved and can be reviewed at later times. Labs/field work will be presented through video conference and supplemented with home self-study options where applicable. On-campus lab/field work will be offered as blocks. As a continuing student in Civil Engineering Technology, your program will be blended. Lectures will occur as scheduled video conferences. Students will have real-time instruction and discussion with faculty and classmates. Lectures will be saved and can be reviewed at later times. Labs/field work will be presented through video conference and supplemented with home self-study options where applicable. On-campus lab/field work will be offered as blocks.

Students are accepted into the Civil Engineering Technology program for the Fall (September) term only.

General admission requirements

All applicants must meet the general admission requirements for Lethbridge College programs as indicated in the Admissions section of this calendar.

Academic requirements

In addition to meeting the general admission requirements indicated in the Admission section of this calendar, applicants to this program must also satisfy the following specific course requirements (or equivalencies):

  • a minimum grade of 50 per cent in Grade 12 Math (equivalent to Alberta’s Math 30-1) or 60 per cent in Grade 12 Math (equivalent to Alberta’s Math 30-2)
  • Grade 11 Physics or Grade 12 Science

Please note that Grade 12 Biology and/or Grade 12 Chemistry will not be accepted in lieu of Grade 12 Science.

Basic understanding of computer technology, such as word processing and copying files, as well as familiarity working in a Windows-based environment is required.

Practicum experience requirements

There is an elective practicum component to this program. The college dictates the legal terms and conditions governing the practicum experience.

Mobile learning program

This is a mobile learning program that requires students to purchase a mobile device from Lethbridge College complete with program specific software.  Find out more.

Applicants who lack the required academic admission requirements can apply to the Academic Upgrading program to upgrade their academic skills.


Upon successful completion of all program requirements, students are awarded a Civil Engineering Technology diploma.

Reshaping the college landscape, redefining your education

Our new Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility positions Lethbridge College as the institution for trades training in southern Alberta by bringing together students, faculty and industry to create a vibrant, responsive learning environment.

The facility is the single most important capital investment for trades and technologies in southern Alberta in over 50 years. It’s also the largest construction project in the college’s history. It has increased our capacity to train the next generation of skilled tradespeople, engineers and interior designers. And it’s revolutionized our curriculum, bringing together students, faculty and industry partners in a modern, environmentally-sensitive space that features:

  • modern labs, apprentice shops, tool rooms, classrooms, meeting rooms and offices
  • more than 200 solar tubes to provide natural light to the workshops and classrooms and to reduce emergency costs (cool fact: the electric lights in the building are programmed to dim or increase based on how much light is coming in naturally)
  • 60 welding booths set up for students to learn five different welding processes
  • rooms housing wind turbine components to train on
  • a design studio and extensive materials library
  • a multi-purpose lab that provides students with learning opportunities for fluid mechanics and surveying applications
  • a dedicated 3D printing room
  • collaborative spaces to incubate the great ideas of tomorrow
