Suicide prevention training

This training session is open to all college staff to help them recognize warning signs, clues and suicidal communications of people in trouble, and gain the skills needed to prevent a possible tragedy. The QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Program stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. This is free training but you need to register online.

Helping students manage exam stress

With final exams looming, Lethbridge College will launch a week-long THRIVE: Exam Stress and Anxiety self-care challenge just for students. A document outlining a series of activities or suggestions for taking care of all aspects of your wellness will be distributed around campus or you can pick one up at Health and Shepell Counselling Services at CE1380. Students who take part in some of the events and suggested activities can keep track of their efforts on the document, then return it to the health centre by April 11 for a chance to win prizes. Individual activities are listed separately in this calendar of events.

Panel discussion with Indigenous alumni

Career and Academic Advising, Indigenous Focus, partnered with Health Services to organize Sopoksisstsosi: Knowledge through Completion. This panel discussion, to be held in The Cave, is an opportunity for Lethbridge College Indigenous alumni to engage with students in a question and answer. The initiative is a chance for current students to engage people who completed their respective programs, to help identify key messages that will serve useful in guiding them and validating any concerns regarding post-secondary education. The event is free to Indigenous students and will include dinner and a child activity area.

The team from Student Services will be at their new kiosk in the Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility (TIFF) building to connect with the students. Student Experience, Learning Services and Student Employment and Professional Development representatives will make appearances. They will be sharing various resources to help support students’ holistic wellness.

Free mini-basketball clinic

Dawn Keith’s basketball class is offering a free mini-basketball clinic for children in Grades 1 to 4 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. April 4. If your kids are interested in fun, fitness and fundamentals of the game, sign them up by contacting Dawn Keith before April 3. This clinic is limited to 24 children.

Culinary Arts and U of L IME team up for Therapeutic Riding

Lethbridge College’s Culinary Arts program and the University of Lethbridge Integrated Management Experience class have joined forces for an event in support of the Lethbridge Therapeutic Riding Association. The No Horsin’ Around Culinary Cook-Off is an interactive dinner with a Hell’s Kitchen theme. It begins with cocktails at 5 p.m., then a gourmet meal at 6:30 p.m. Diners serve as judges of competing courses. Tickets are $100 per person and available now online. The Therapeutic Riding Association provides therapeutic instruction in riding and horse care to people with special needs.

Kodiaks 10-4 Road Race tradition continues

Established in 1974, the Kodiaks 10/4 Road Race is Lethbridge’s oldest ongoing running event. Runners can choose from a 10-mile or four-mile race. There’s also a one-mile race for children. The event supports Kodiaks athletics. Registration is $35 by April 2, to receive a collectible Kodiaks shirt; $25 by April 5 without a shirt; or $60 for a family of two adults and up to four youth, 15 or younger. The one-mile kid’s race costs just $10, or it’s free with two adult registrations. Registration and more information is online.

Smash your stress away before finals

The Lethbridge College Students’ Association will hold a barbecue and car smash to help alleviate student stress before final exam week. Students can donate cash or non-perishable food items to the LCSA Food Bank to earn a chance to smash a car, which will be parked outside the south entrance to the Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility (TIFF). A free barbecue lunch for students is also planned.

Webinar on helping children learn to use tools

The Early Childhood Education program’s professional development webinar series continues with three sessions in April. In this session, presenter Mavis Lewis-Webber will discuss the steps involved in developing a whittling program with children. All aspects of risk management in tool use will be discussed. This webinar series is open to early childhood education professionals, parents and anyone with an interest. The cost is $35 and you must register in advance.

The 2018 KODI Awards celebration will recognize individual athletes and outstanding events, including best upset and best comebacks, at an annual celebration event in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. Admission is free but the Kodiaks encourage attendees to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Lethbridge College Students’ Association food bank.

Smile, you’re in a convocation video!

Staff from across campus are invited to participate in the creation of a fun video to express congratulations to our convocates. The video, initiated by students and to be produced by Digital Communications and Media students, will feature a fast-paced walk through the halls of the campus giving each people from each academic and service centre an opportunity to cheer on our students. This also happens to be the last day of regular classes on campus.

Doggy de-stress returns for final exam week

Lethbridge College Early Childhood Education instructor Bora Kim will present a webinar on Advocating for Outdoor Play, as part of the ECE program’s professional development webinar series. This webinar will highlight the importance of outdoor play in children’s development and learning, current issues regarding outdoor play, and possible ways to advocate for outdoor play. Participants are invited to join in discussions on how to become an advocate for outdoor play. The creative forces found at Lethbridge College’s Fashion Design and Sustainable Production program and the University of Lethbridge Dramatic Arts program will come together for an evening of fashion, costume, art and a market. The I’ll Show You Mine: Deconstructing Costume — Constructing Fashion event will be held at the south entrance of the college’s Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility (TIFF). Mental Health First Aid

This course is a certified training program to help people improve their knowledge of mental health issues and disorders, teach strategies for how to respond to people experiencing mental health issues, and help identify community resources to access for support. Staff who complete both days will receive certification that is nationally recognized and regulated through the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Certification does not expire. Space is limited to this on-campus training opportunity. You must register in advance.

Celebrating our convocating Indigenous students

Indigenous Honour Night is a celebration of our 2018 convocating Indigenous students. Hosted by Indigenous Services and RBC Foundation, the event includes gift presentations to convocates, alumni speakers and entertainment. Convocates receive one complimentary ticket to the event. Guest tickets are $25 each. Doors to the Garden Court Restaurant open at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6. Please order your tickets online by April 6.

Dr. Beverlie Dietze, director of Learning and Applied Research at Okanagan College, and Lethbridge College Early Childhood Education instructor Bora Kim will present on Creating Outdoor Play Environments with a Sense of Wonder. This is the fifth of seven webinar opportunities in the ECE program’s professional development webinar series. This webinar series is open to early childhood education professionals, parents and anyone with an interest. The cost is $35 and you must register in advance. High school students on campus for skills competition

High school students from across southern Alberta will be on Lethbridge College campus to take part in South West Regional Skills competition. Eleven competitions range from cabinet making and welding to baking and video production. This event is a partnership between college, Career Transitions and Skills Canada Alberta. This is one of nine regional events, with winners advancing to a provincial competition. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. The day concludes with an awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.

World’s first virtual reality conference held in virtual reality

Lethbridge College and the VR/AR Association have organized the first full-day virtual reality and augmented reality conference being held completely in virtual reality. Merging Realities: An Event of Multiple Perspectives sounds unreal, right? Keynote speakers include Alex Katzen, a content specialist on Google’s Daydream business development team; Alan Smithson, CEO of MetaVRse and the entrepreneur who invented and brought to market the SmithsonMartin Emulator DJ System; and Cathy Hackl, author of Marketing New Realities: An Introduction to VR & AR Marketing, Branding and Communications. Due to high demand for this event, a limited number of people will be able to participate in the VR sessions, but every attendee will be able to participate via the live-stream. Following the full-day conference, an in-person VR mixer will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lethbridge College. This mixer will bring together Lethbridge College students who have created 360-degree experiences and VR video games; VR businesses including Mammoth VR, VRKade and CTRL V; the Regional Innovation Network of Southern Alberta, Economic Development Lethbridge, the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce; and many more participants. Distinguished alumni and Honorary Degree recipient to be honoured

Lethbridge College honours its Honorary Degree recipient and its alumni award recipients at the Honouring Excellence 2018 gala. A cocktail reception and dinner prepared by college culinary students and staff are planned at this gala in the Garden Court Dining Room. Tickets are $75; alumni $65; students $50; and a table of eight is $500. Convocation ceremonies take place at the Enmax Centre as our graduates walk the stage to the applause of family and friends. Students completing their programs have to apply to graduate.

Registration starts for summer camps

Lethbridge College Corporate and Continuing Education is now accepting registrations to its various summer camps for kids, including:

  • Totally U G!rl: a camp for tween girls that offers interactive sessions that are fun and valuable as girls mature into confident young women.
  • Totally Dance Fusion: a dance camp for children ages six to nine.
  • Move to Improve: a one-week camp to help children develop foundational movement skills.
  • Babysitting Boot Camp: all the tools to help 12- to 16-year-olds build a successful and safe babysitting business.
  • Culinary camps for 10- to 16-year-olds, exploring appetizers through dessert.
  • Trades Exploration Camp: for 14- to 16-year-olds.

Food for Fines campaign at the library

The Buchanan Library’s spring edition of Food for Fines will continue all month until Convocation Day, April 27. Students, staff, alumni and community members are invited to participate by bringing a donation of non-perishable food to the library for the Lethbridge College Students’ Association Food Bank. At this time, there is a particular need for breakfast items. If you have outstanding fines, this could be a way to have them forgiven.
