What’s Happening at Lethbridge College — March 2018

Feb. 28, 2018 — Lethbridge College is pleased to host a number of ongoing and special events on campus in the coming weeks.


Thursday, March 1, through Saturday, March 3

Cora 2018 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championships

  • March madness is coming to Lethbridge College as the ACAC’s best men’s basketball teams battle for the Alberta title and for two available berths in the CCAA National Championship tournament in Laval, Que., March 14 to 17. Visit gokodiaks.ca/championships for tournament ticket and schedule information. Digital Communications and Media students will be heavily involved in social media, photography, game recaps and webcasts of the tournament.


Thursday, March 1

Canstruction competition

  • It’s build day for a team of Lethbridge College students and faculty competing in Canstruction, a competition of design and construction using cans of food destined for Lethbridge College Students’ Association Food Bank, Interfaith Food Bank Society of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Food Bank. The team will be at Centre Village Mall, 1240 2 A  Ave. N., Lethbridge, building their design. Their creation will be on display until March 28 with winners to be honoured at an award ceremony in April.

  • Awards and scholarships applications open in March for new and returning Lethbridge College. Please visit our website for an extensive list of awards available.

Resiliency discussion

  • What is resiliency and how can I build up resiliency in myself and foster it in others? That’s the subject of a session open to everyone in the college community. This is a Mental Health First Aid Community of Practice meeting aimed at fostering a healthy campus culture. Please register before attending at TE1228.

Free student success workshops

  • The Learning Café offers free workshops for students on a range of topics. Each session runs about 50 minutes. A sign-up sheet is found in the Learning Café in CE1340.
    • APA Basics, 10 a.m. March 1
    • Managing stress, noon, March 2
    • Improving memory, 10 a.m., March 5
    • Writing better research papers, 1 p.m. March 6
    • Test taking strategies, 11 a.m., March 7

Information about future workshops can be found online. Students who cannot attend the scheduled workshops are encouraged to book an appointment with an academic strategist in the Learning Café.

LGBTQ+ awareness

  • Lethbridge College and the OUTreach of Southern Alberta Community Education Program present an LGBTQ+ awareness and how to be an ally session for employees and students. Learn the terminology and language related to sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as how to be an ally. Please preregister.

 

Monday, March 5, noon to 1 p.m.

Lunch and learn session on Office 365

  • All staff are invited to a lunch and learn session on Office 365, Microsoft’s productivity software and cloud sharing system. The Information Technology team will lead a 30-minute information session, followed by a 15-minute question period. Register online to attend.

Crucial Conversations workshop

  • Lethbridge College offers practical training for all employees in Crucial Conversations, a practical, strategy-based approach for having challenging conversations at work or at home, with supervisors, colleagues, students, family or friends. Register online. Space is limited.

 

Tuesday, March 6, 6 p.m.

Gluten- and dairy-free dinner

  • Lethbridge College Culinary Careers students will prepare a gluten- and dairy-free dinner for the whole family. Door prizes and gluten-free information will be available. Tickets are $44 for adults and $25 for children. Get your tickets by March 1 at Nutter’s Bulk and Natural Foods.

Cultural support program

  • Blackfoot Elder Peter Weasel Moccasin will be available at the Niitsitapi Gathering Place (AN1501) for a drop-in cultural support program. Students are welcome to visit with the elder as a form of support and to enhance a sense of community. Career Networking Night

  • The School of Allied Health and the School of Health Science will hold their Career Networking Night in CB1016. Students in these schools studying to become massage therapists, unit clerks, registered or licenced practical nurses and others will have an opportunity to connect with potential employers. This event is free but you must preregister to attend.

Celebrate our Women of Distinction

  • The 2018 YWCA Women of Distinction Awards will honour two of Lethbridge College’s finest, along with seven other award recipients this year. President and CEO Dr. Paula Burns will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, and academic strategist Silvana Campus will receive an Education and Mentorship Award. Tickets are available online if you’d like to join this celebration at the Lethbridge Lodge Hotel and Conference Centre.

Deadline to submit proposals to present at CACCE

  • Lethbridge College is hosting the 15th annual conference of the Canadian Association of Continuing Care Educators, May 24 to 25, at the Coast Hotel and Conference Centre. Even if you’re not a continuing care educator, you may have outstanding teaching practices you could share with conference attendees. The conference theme is Interprofessional Education and Innovative Teaching Strategies. You have until March 9 to submit an abstract on topics such as interprofessional practice; innovating teaching practices; student success stories and strategies; accommodating unique teaching/learning needs; workplace culture; diversity; integrating technology; and engaging learners.

Student dodgeball tournament

  • LCSA Campus Recreation will hold a dodgeball tournament for up to 12 teams. The sign-up sheet is at CE1350.

 

Monday, March 12

Order your Easter pie today

  • Starting today, you can place your order for pie, a perfect companion to your Easter dinner plans. Orders will be accepted until March 26 or until the pies are sold out. Choose from four different kinds: baked apple, pumpkin, pecan or mixed berries with streusel topping. Pies are $7 each, or order a dozen baklava, also for $7. These beautiful baked goods are made by students in the Culinary program. Your order will be available for pick up at noon March 29.

Expressions Magazine in production

  • Expressions Magazine, an annual publication created from start to finish by Digital Communication and Media students, will be in production and ready for release later in the month. Follow this project on Twitter for updates and a peek behind the scenes.

Yoga for Emotional Wellness

  • This class offers a gentle exploration of the mind-body connection. All levels of experience are welcome. If you have your own yoga mat, please bring it along. Register in advance for this session in PE2408.

Mature learner information session

  • Recruitment services will be hosting mature learner information sessions designed for anyone who has taken one or more years away from school. Future students will get the answers they need to make the right decision about college for them. They’ll discuss how to overcome the barriers unique to mature learners and how Student Services can help them achieve success in their chosen program. We’ll also go over the application process, and provide information students need to start on their path to becoming a student at Lethbridge College. Register online, please. This session is also offered March 21 and 24.

Learning Café support for Indigenous students

  • The academic strategists from the Learning Café will meet with Indigenous students at the Niitsitapi Gathering Place (AN1501). By making a connection in the Gathering Place, a comfortable space created for Indigenous students, the event encourages students to make use of the Learning Café, located in the Buchanan Library, as needed.

Suicide prevention program

  • Learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicidal person through this QPR program. It stands for Question, Persuade and Refer and will help you gain skills to intervene when you see someone in crisis. Register online for this session in TE1228.

  • The Excellence in Teaching and Learning Council will be holding a wine and cheese recognition event in the Buchanan Library. This is a celebration of excellence in teaching, research and community building.

Webinar on Connecting Children to Nature

  • The Early Childhood Education webinar series is for professionals, parents/families and students with an interest in childhood development. This session will be presented by Mary Lou Lummiss, a faculty member in the ECE program at Fleming College. She’ll be presenting on how to cultivate children’s connections to the natural world. Tuesday, March 20, to Sunday, March 25

Professional squash tournament

  • The first professional squash tournament ever hosted in Lethbridge will be held at Lethbridge College. The ScotiaMcLeod, Charlton and Hill Squash Pro-Am has attracted players from 12 countries. From the qualifying rounds, March 20 and 21, four players will emerge to join the main draw. The main draw will play out from March 22 to 25. Seating is limited and tickets are $20 a day or $30 for the event. You can watch the qualifying rounds for free. This event is organized by the Lethbridge Squash Association.

Laser tag

  • All Lethbridge College students are welcome to join this laser tag event at Gym C. Residence Life and Lethbridge College Students’ Association are planning this event, offering food, prizes and other games. Students can register at the LCSA office.

Wellness Wednesday breakfast

  • LCSA serves up its monthly Wellness Wednesday Breakfast from 9 a.m. until all 30 breakfasts are gone.

Naloxone training

  • In response to the Fentanyl crisis, ARCHES Lethbridge is providing this training on campus for students and staff to help detect and respond to an opioid overdose. Please register in advance.

  • Nominate a deserving instructor for the Lethbridge College Faculty Association and Lethbridge College Students’ Association Teaching Excellence Awards. Nominees are instructors who regularly demonstrate their warmth, enthusiasm and passion for teaching. As a student, you love the course they teach and you know they are dedicated to your learning. Their caring doesn’t stop at the classroom door; they make you feel as if your success is their success. Early Childhood Education Conference

  • The Incomparable Learning Environment, Outdoor Play: There’s Nothing Else Like It” is the theme of this Early Childhood Education Conference being held at Lethbridge College. Presented by the Child Care Directors’ Association of Southwest Alberta, the conference begins March 23 with a session for child care directors on the Alberta Curriculum Framework Project. To attend this portion, email [email protected] in advance. The main conference is March 24 with sessions on outdoor play and the Health Status of Childcare Workers Project. Registration is $125.

KAIROS blanket exercise

  • College staff are invited to learn more about how colonization of the land we now know as Canada has affected the people who lived here long before settlers arrived. Through this participatory workshop, individuals will explore the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada over 500 years, why the relationships is often broken and how we can work toward reconciliation. Saturday, March 24

Simulated incident learning event

  • Dozens of students from Criminal Justice — Policing, Digital Communications and Media, Emergency Medical Technician, Health Care Aide and Nursing Education of Southwestern Alberta programs will put the skills and knowledge learned in a classroom into practice during a mock disaster scenario on campus. This could affect traffic and access to parts of campus as the disaster scenario unfolds.

Food for Fines campaign

  • Buchanan Library offers a great way for students to clear their outstanding overdue fines while supporting the Students’ Association Food Bank. In exchange for a donation of a non-perishable food item, regular outstanding fines may be forgiven. Some restrictions apply.

Teaching ESL literacy learners workshop

  • Participants will learn to recognize English as a Second Language literacy learners and distinguish between different levels, as well as explore principles, strategies and resources for teaching ESL learners. This workshop is focused on students struggling with literacy. It’s not suited to ESL students already admitted to academic programs who may be struggling in their programs due to other issues. Métis training and employment services on campus

  • The Rupertsland Institute mobile employment services unit will be at Lethbridge College. The RV will be parked on the east side of campus, outside the Andrews Building. The portable unit offers training and employment services to Métis students.

Webinar on Spirituality and Young Children

  • The Early Childhood Education webinar series is for professionals, parents/families and students with an interest in childhood development. This session will be presented by Liz Hicks, a child care consultant from Nova Scotia. Her topic is Spirituality and Young Children: Knowing Your Place in the World, examining how spirituality, curiosity, wonder and wisdom are interconnected, and how early learning teachers can nurture children’s spirituality. Student for a Day

  • Prospective Lethbridge College students can see first-hand what it’s like to attend Lethbridge College in March, paired with a current student from the program of their choice. Contact Recruitment Services at 403-320-3322 or visit our Student for a Day website.

 

Apply to graduate

  • Students planning to complete their graduation requirements by June 30 (or Aug. 30 for online courses) must complete a form and apply to graduate. Do so before March 30 for an early bird discount. Details are on the Convocation webpage. Please bookmark this, as more information will be added as we get closer to Convocation on April 27.

 

Discounts on massage to support the food bank

  • Until March 22, the Lethbridge College Student Massage Clinic will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items for the LCSA Food Bank in exchange for $5 off a massage. Book your massage by calling 403-329-7274. The clinic’s hours are 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays through Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays.

 

Evening dining in Garden Court Restaurant

  • Anyone who appreciates a fine meal should reserve a spot for evening dining in the Garden Court restaurant. Dinner reservations are available from 5 to 8 p.m., March 1, 2, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15. That wraps up dinner opportunities for this year, but watch for lunch buffets coming in April. Please call 403-320-3230 to reserve.

 

Visit the Students Services kiosk in TTIF

  • Students Services’ new kiosk in the Trades, Technologies and Innovation Facility (TTIF) building will be open to connect students to a range of services March 7, 15, 19 and 27. Student Experience, Academic Advising, Learning Services, Student Employment & Professional Development and Residence staff will make appearances. Stop by to access resources that help support students’ holistic wellness.
