To help inspire our stay-at-home movie viewing, we invited Michael Doughty, Student Awards funding specialist and film buff, to offer a Netflix recommendation in Thursday’s Connections for possible weekend viewing.

Burned out on Tiger King? This weekend, check out Wild Wild Country on Netflix. This six-part documentary follows the establishment of a controversial spiritual commune in rural Oregon in the 1980s.

Synopsis: “When a controversial cult leader builds a utopian city in the Oregon desert, conflict with the locals escalates into a national scandal.” – Netflix

Why you should watch it: Just like Tiger King, Wild Wild Country has its share of extreme characters and behaviours. You’ll be left scratching your head at the lengths some people will go to for power.

Critical reception: 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, winner of the Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.
