Lethbridge College is pleased to host a number of ongoing and special events on campus in the month ahead.

Student art showcase

  • Add some colour and perspective to your life! The ART 1150 annual student showcase is now underway in the Library Commons, Info Desk and Quiet Study area. The showcase will run until Dec. 5. Come check out drawings, paintings, mixed media assignments and final projects any time during regular library hours.

Student Services in new TTIF building

  • Student Services will have a kiosk set up in the new TTIF building to connect with Lethbridge College students. Student Experience, Academic Advising, Health and Shepell Counselling, and the Learning Café will all make appearances. They will be sharing various resources to help support the students’ holistic wellness. Stop by and say hello.

First Responder to Sexual Assault and Abuse training

  • This training, which is offered by the college’s Health and Wellness department, is intended to build the capacity of professionals, paraprofessionals and community members to assess and respond effectively to disclosures of sexual assault and sexual abuse. Register and learn more online.

LCSA Children’s Skate Party

  • Students and staff are invited to bring out their kids for some holiday fun as the LCSA will host its annual free children’s Christmas skating party at the Enmax Centre. There will be snacks, pizza, grab bags for kids, plenty of mascots (including elves and Disney princesses) and, of course, Santa Claus himself. So bring your skates and have some fun. Poiskinnaaksin (face painting) and Winter Feast

  • The Poiskinnaaksin event is a health and wellness initiative, providing traditional face painting and prayer for students with our Indigenous Elders from 9:30 to 11 a.m. This event is followed by a winter feast from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Niitsitapi Gathering Place (AN1501), where students are welcome to drop by for a free turkey dinner.

QPR Suicide Prevention training

  • The goal of this course, which is offered by the college’s Health and Wellness department, is to teach participants to recognize the warning signs, clues and suicidal communications of people in trouble, and gain skills to act vigorously to prevent a possible tragedy.   • Thinking about participating in a Career Roundtable Discussion (CRD)? Not sure what they are about? CRDs are discussion sessions to learn about career strategy development including but not limited to resume and cover letter writing, interview prep, networking, LinkedIn, etc. All students are invited to stop in to a CRD to begin prepping for a transition from academics to career. Doggy de-stress calms students during final exams

  • Student Experience will be offering its annual Doggy De-stress event in TE1228. This mental health initiative brings furry friends with a friendly disposition on campus to help students relax during final exam week. Last fall almost 600 students visited the Doggy De-stress room, and it’s sure to be a hit again this year. Final exams run from Monday, Dec. 11 to Friday, Dec. 15.

Visioning and Leading Outdoor Play in Alberta – Symposium

  • The Early Childhood Education program is hosting a symposium focused on the challenges and opportunities for children’s outdoor play in Alberta. Keynote speakers include Christine Alden, a program director with the Lawson Foundation, and Dr. Mariana Brussoni, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia. Other speakers include Peter McCracken, regional manager of the Fundy region for the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, Communities, Sport and Recreation Division; Dr. Beverlie Dietze, the director of Learning and Applied Research at Okanagan College; and Bora Kim, a current Lethbridge College faculty member in the Early Childhood Education program. Faculty in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program at Lethbridge College participated in an applied research project sponsored by the Lawson Foundation, beginning in the winter of 2016. This spearheaded interest in developing a focus on outdoor play as central to the ECE program and the development of a collaborative partnership with the Hands On Early Learning Centre.   • Early Childhood Education professional development webinar series 2017 led by Dr. Beverlie Dietze.   • This course, which is offered by the college’s Health and Wellness department, will help improve participants’ knowledge of mental health issues and disorders, teach strategies of how to respond to people experiencing mental health issues, and help identify community resources to access for support.   • The PE Building will be open during the holiday break with a few exceptions. It will be closed on Dec. 24, 25, 26 and Jan. 1. Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 27, 28 and 29, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 30 and 31. Any questions? Call 403-382-6903.

Ongoing events and updates

Inaugural $avvy $tudent Recipe Contest winner announced

  • The first $avvy $tudent Recipe Contest was launched to promote awareness of financial aid services on campus. Student Awards and Financial Aid worked in collaboration with the LCSA, Student Services and Chef Mark Dieser, who tested student-submitted recipes at home and scored them for a variety of attributes. The winning student is Katie Moedt, who won $50 gift cards to both Tim Hortons and Safeway for her detailed instructions and breakfast recipe. Based on Chef Mark’s feedback, Katie’s recipe may be featured at an upcoming Wellness Wednesday breakfast. Congratulations to Katie, and thanks to all of the departments that worked together to make this collaboration possible!
     

Student massage clinic holiday specials

  • The student massage clinic is offering a pair of specials for the holiday season. If you book a massage now, you can get $5 off by bringing a donation for the LCSA Food Bank. The clinic is also selling a special package of five massage treatments for the price of four, which makes for great stocking stuffers! The clinic is open from 5 to 9 p.m. from Tuesdays to Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Prices and more information by calling 403-329-7274.

 

Indigenous display in Founders’ Square now through January

  • Stop by Founders’ Square by the Food Court and check out the Indigenous display on loan from the Galt Museum. The newly renovated space on campus also tells the story of Lethbridge College’s history and celebrates the college’s rich Indigenous history.

 

Lethbridge College surveying alumni

  • The college has launched an alumni survey where we are asking our grads questions about their program experience, employment outcomes after graduation and ways that the Alumni office can better engage with our alumni after they have successfully completed their programs. If you are an alumnus and get an email or a phone call asking you to participate in the alumni survey, we hope you feel inclined to participate. Surveys are an integral method for us to gather data to better serve and support the alumni community!

 

Food for Fines in the Buchanan Library

  • Help the library spread the word that Food for Fines started on Nov. 27 and will end Dec. 21. All are welcome to participate including students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. Bring a donation of non-perishable food to the Buchanan Library for the Lethbridge College Students’ Association Food Bank and in exchange, receive a sweet treat and be entered into a prize draw. Also, if you have any outstanding overdue fines, they may be forgiven. Our theme this year is "Spread the Word, Feeding Students is Sweet."

 

The Student Activities Calendar connects students with campus supports

  • The Student Activities Calendar was created six years ago to address the students’ academic, social, emotional and physical wellness. It is located on myHorizon and entries include everything from Learning Café workshops, LCSA events, Kodiaks games, mental health initiatives, important dates and deadlines, and so much more. To increase awareness, Student Experience has revitalized the calendar with new content, face-to-face promotions and free giveaways.

 

Distinguished alumni nominations being accepted now through Jan. 12, 2018

  • Nominations are now open for outstanding alumni who will be recognized at Lethbridge College’s 2018 Honouring Excellence event. Any of the more than 30,000 college graduates, of any age and in any field, are eligible to be nominated for one of four Honouring Excellence awards, based on their work in their careers, in the community and in the college. The awards will be presented at a recognition event on April 26, 2018.
