Wider Horizons

The robin’s return to campus is always welcome, although, according to the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation, some robins choose to overwinter in Alberta. Whether they decide to head south – some flying as far as southern Mexico and Guatemala – has less to do with the temperature and more to do with whether there is enough food to sustain them over the winter.

While this fine-feathered-friend didn’t divulge its travel routes, spotting a robin on campus is a true sign of spring. Hearing one is an even greater pleasure – as robins sing when they arrive in their breeding territories. Robins usually lay two sets of eggs a year, starting in late April or early May. Both females and males feed and care for three to four nestlings once they hatch.
