Nancy Russell’s first job at Lethbridge College was in 1980 as a clerk in the Buchanan Library. She says the college has changed a lot since she started and she has enjoyed being a part of its evolution. “I believe in education and the value that it brings, so working in a post-secondary environment is a good fit,” she says.
Currently serving as manager of student engagement and retention in Student Services, Nancy taught for 16 years in Office Administration, Business Administration and Business Training and Development. She also spent two years as associate registrar. “My role in the Registrar’s Office and now Student Services has been a nice complement to my teaching experience as I see how we all support students at Lethbridge College,” she says.
Nancy’s husband, John Russell, also teaches at the college. He has been a marketing instructor in Business Administration for 25 years. He has led some memorable international study tours with business students and maintains contact with post-secondary contacts in Holland, Finland and France. John is an alum of the very program he now teaches within – he graduated in 1985. He also curled with the Lethbridge College Curling Team as a student.
With so much history at the college, it’s no surprise their children, Carlee and Rory, became students. And now, a third generation Russell also comes to campus every day, as Nancy and John’s grandson, Payton, attends the daycare. Rory says he chose Lethbridge College because of the opportunity to play basketball with the Kodiaks – they went to P.E.I. for nationals in 2017 – and the great business program.
“Both of my parents worked there, so it was an easy choice,” he says. Rory is planning to study in an exchange program in Lyon, France, in fall 2018. Carlee appreciated how the college was close to home. She values the friendships she made during her time as a student.
