Poverty Awareness Week activities begin 
Lethbridge College will hold a series of activities this week in recognition of Poverty Awareness Week, to acknowledge the impact of financial stress on students and bring awareness to the supports and strategies available for students to be successful. Today’s activities are: 

  • The Ecumenical Campus Ministry will provide a free chili lunch to all students from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in Centre Core. 
  • Mark Kalinowski from the Credit Counselling Society will provide a seminar on financial basics including how to open a bank account, what to consider when choosing a bank, why budgets are important and how to create and maintain a good credit rating. The session runs from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Sunflower Room (TE1202). Participants should register in advance.  


Wednesday, Oct. 10 
Experience poverty in this simulation 
Poverty Awareness Week continues, acknowledging the impact of financial stress on students and bringing awareness to the supports and strategies available for students to be successful. 

  • Lethbridge College Students’ Association (LCSA) provides its Wellness Wednesday free breakfast to students, from 9 to 10 a.m. in Centre Core. Over the course of the academic year, LCSA provides 13 free Wellness Wednesday breakfasts. 
  • The United Way will be on campus to put on a poverty simulation, as a way to challenge perceptions, change perspectives and strengthen understanding and empathy. Participants will experience a full range of encounters, obstacles and challenges, while trained volunteers populate the simulation as business owners, teachers, police officers, agency workers, service providers and government employees. The simulation replicates a month in the life of a family living in poverty. The ultimate mission of each of these families is to access food, shelter and other basic needs with a limited income. Participants need to register in advance for this event, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium, Gym B.  


Wednesday, Oct. 10, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. 
View the Ashcroft Design Challenge home 
The media is invited to a VIP viewing of the Ashcroft Design Challenge home, created by Lethbridge College Interior Design Technology students. The winner of the $10,000 Ashcroft Giving Back Scholarship Contest will also be announced. This home is at 111 Pacific Landing West. Media availability is at 1 p.m.  


Thursday, Oct. 11, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 
National Student Day celebration 
Students will be treated to a free barbecue lunch, cotton candy and popcorn during Lethbridge College’s annual National Student Day. Organized by the Bookstore team, this event will include T-shirt giveaways. Watch for the Lethbridge College Students’ Association (LCSA) to be organizing fun activities as well. The crowd will be gathered at the front of the college. Staff are welcome to enjoy the barbecue for a donation to the LCSA campus garden.  


Thursday, Oct. 11, 1 to 2 p.m. 
Learn about student loans 
Whether you already have a student loan or you haven’t even considered it, this information session will reveal some relatively unknown tips about borrowing. Participants will learn who’s eligible, why student loans are more desirable than lines of credit, and how and when to apply. Participants should register in advance for this session in the Richardson Oilseed Room (CE1305). Our Financial Aid staff are providing the expertise at this session.   


Thursday October 11, 2 to 3 p.m. 
A taste test for all your senses 
Lethbridge College’s Culinary Careers program is gathering sensory data on the produce and fish grown in the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence. This research is part of a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)-support project. Volunteers survey five or six different products, using sight, smell, taste and touch — it’s called organoleptic. To date, testing has been done on tilapia fish, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, cilantro, kale, chard, romaine lettuce, bok choy and radishes. Products are served without butter or other seasonings. Volunteers need to be able to: 

  • distinguish between sweet, bitter, sour, salty and astringent 
  • consume produce and herbs in their regular diet 
  • and not suffer from colour blindness, ageusia (can’t taste) or anosmia (can’t smell) 


Friday, Oct. 12, noon to 1 p.m. 
Learn to eat well on a budget 
Robyn Armstrong from the Interfaith Food Bank will present a session on how to eat well on a limited budget. Lunch will be made during the presentation, so come expecting to leave with food, some basic savvy shopping strategies and some new cooking and eating know-how. The session will be held in TE1228. Students should register in advance.  


Saturday, Oct. 13, 6 to 10 p.m. 
Basketball season begins 
The Kodiaks basketball teams open their season with a home appearance against the SAIT Trojans in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m., with men in action at 8 p.m. Admission is free to Lethbridge College students with their student ID, $5 for seniors, youth and alumni, $3 for college employees and $8 for the public.
