New online training program launches on workplace respect
Lethbridge College will launch a new online training initiative called Respect in the Workplace. The training takes 90 minutes to complete and will help employees identify and prevent issues such as bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination. The program is part of the college’s goal to promote an inclusive, healthy work environment that nurtures the health and well-being of all employees. The program was developed by the Respect Group and customized for Lethbridge College in collaboration with the college’s Occupational Health and Safety team.

Mental Illness Awareness Week begins
Mental Illness Awareness Week begins. The Alberta Health Services South Zone Prevention and Promotion Team, Addiction and Mental Health Services in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, will hold “Coffee and Conversations” from 1 to 3 p.m. in Centre Core. This is a chance to talk about mental illness, share facts and learn about resources.

New program supports student resilience
This fall, Lethbridge College introduced a new program to support student success and resiliency. SCoRE stands for Student Curriculum on Resilience Education. Students participate in small group discussion, individual appointments and online assessments to improve their resiliency in areas of social connections, life skills, self-care and cognitive style. There are five 50-minute workshops facilitated by two social work practicum students. The program is part of Lethbridge College’s ongoing commitment to mental health and wellness. A first round of workshops is wrapping up in early October with a second round starting the week of Oct. 29.

What says Thanksgiving more than pumpkin pie?
Looking for a photo or video to remind everyone how early Thanksgiving is this year? Pay a visit to our Culinary program where students will be making and boxing apple, pumpkin, pecan and mixed berry pies. The pies have been pre-ordered and pre-paid and will be ready for pick up by noon Thursday. But there’s an opportunity for photos or video before that of the baking or the packing.

Justice Studies students have their day in court
School of Justice Studies students will have the opportunity to experience a Court of Queens Bench criminal trial in the realistic surroundings of the college’s courtroom (AN1756) with senior lawyers from the Crown Prosecutors Office serving as prosecutors, and retired police officers serving as defence counsel. Adonus Arlett from the RCMP Victims Services Unit will be in attendance with therapy dog Madison, who is trained to help witnesses deal with their stress as they testify in court. There are two separate classes taking part in two-day “trials.” The first class is in the courtroom from 1 to 2:20 p.m., Oct. 2 and again Oct. 4. The second class will be in the courtroom from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Oct. 2 and Oct. 4.

Training offered to help victims of sexual assault, abuse
As part of ongoing efforts to ensure a safe environment for all, Lethbridge College will offer First Responder to Sexual Assault and Abuse Training, a comprehensive two-day training opportunity, open to all employees. This is the first of four offerings planned this year. The training is intended to build the capacity of professionals, paraprofessionals and community members to assess and respond effectively to disclosures of sexual assault and sexual abuse.  Survivors who receive safe and supportive responses to disclosures of sexual violence are more likely to reach out for help from medical and counselling services and/ or report to police.

LGBTQ+ awareness session
As part of ongoing efforts to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students, the college is offering Queer 102, a follow-up session to its introductory course on how to be an ally to LGBTQ+ individuals. Queer 102 expands on the basic terminology presented in the introductory course and covers topics such as passive homophobia and transphobia. This session is part of a series of awareness sessions that began in September.

Kodiaks soccer host Ambrose
The Lethbridge College Kodiaks soccer teams will be in action against the Ambrose University Lions. Women’s action begins at noon, men’s at 2 p.m., at the Servus Soccer Centre Outdoor Field. Admission is free to Lethbridge College students with their student ID, $5 for seniors, youth and alumni, $3 for staff and $8 for the public.

Kodiaks soccer teams play host to Medicine Hat
Kodiaks soccer action continues this weekend with the men’s and women’s soccer squads taking on the visiting Medicine Hat Rattlers. See the women Kodiaks in action at noon with the men to follow at 2 p.m. at the Servus Soccer Centre Outdoor Field. Admission is free to Lethbridge College students with their student ID, $5 for seniors, youth and alumni, $3 for staff and $8 for the public.
