College community recognizes Orange Shirt Day

Lethbridge College invites students, staff and the broader community to join us in a spirit of reconciliation and hope, recognizing the legacy of Canada’s residential schools and honouring the resilience and culture of Indigenous peoples. A short Orange Shirt Day program is planned in Centre Core at 10 a.m. to open a Legacy of Hope Residential School exhibit, which will be on display until Oct. 4. Following the program at 11 a.m., a Cookies and Conversation discussion will be held in the E.C. Fredericks Theatre, featuring a panel of college Grandparents/Elders Peter Weasel Moccasin, Georgette Fox, Betty Ann Little Wolf and Louise Saloff. Orange Shirt Day grew out a B.C. Indigenous woman’s experience at a residential school. The public is welcome to see the Legacy of Hope display from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., all week. While on campus, the public can also see the Ohkotoki'aahkkoiyiiniimaan Showcase in Centre Core. This display recognizes the college’s Blackfoot name, meaning “stone pipe.” The public can also visit Founders’ Square, a space dedicated to telling the story of the land where the college now sits, across from the Culinary Market in the Andrews Building.

We show support to our Sisters in Spirit

Lethbridge College students will lead a special event to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. This is a chance for the campus community to participate in advance of this evening’s vigil in Galt Gardens. The event will feature a short film inspired by the murder of Gloria Black Plume, a member of the Blackfoot Nation in Calgary, in 1999. Members of Black Plume’s family will be in attendance. Her granddaughters Selena and Kerri-Ann Medicine Shield are Lethbridge College students who planned this event. Students Keira Standing Alone and Kasmira Fox organized faceless doll making sessions in advance of the event. The dolls represent the missing and murdered women and will be incorporated into the evening vigil.
