Food for Fines enters 30th campaign

What started in December 2003 as a way to support the Lethbridge College Students’ Association Food Bank will enter a 30th campaign this fall as the Buchanan Library kicks off Food for Fines. This is an opportunity to make donations to the LCSA Food Bank. Donors with overdue library fines owing may find forgiveness. This year’s campaign theme is SOS: Support our students by stocking our shelves. Food for Fines began as an annual fall event until 2007, when a spring campaign was added to address student need. Incredibly, the same driving force behind Food for Fines has been involved in all 30 campaigns. Cindy Warner says more than 1,160 participants have support campaigns over time, and that includes several groups on campus. Gift cards, cash donations and nonperishable food items are welcome. Your gift makes a difference to our students.

Social entrepreneur brings inspiring business message to campus

Mark Brand is a chef and social entrepreneur who has 11 businesses under his belt. He oversees five impact companies under the MB Inc. umbrella. In addition, he is a Stanford fellow, professor of innovation at the University of Southern California, and executive chef for The American Refugee Committee. In 2013, he created The Token Program, an alternative currency to feed people without any exchange of cash. What started in Vancouver has now launched with partners from San Francisco to Nova Scotia. Tickets to see Mark Brand are free and this event is open to students, college employees and community partners. Please register in advance.
