Chili lunch for Movember

Chili of every imaginable variety and spice level will be available for sale in Centre Core during Mo Chili Day. Organized by the whimsically named Hairy Cousins Gang, a group of faculty and staff from across campus, the chili lunch is to raise money for Movember, in support of men’s health issues. For a fun way to bring attention to men’s health issues, stop by. The gang is also holding a 50/50 draw, planning a trivia night fundraiser and accepting donations online. That’s commitment!

Lethbridge College students participate in poverty simulation

Lethbridge College students in the Child and Youth Care diploma programs will be participating in a poverty simulation as part of a class on Family Systems and Development. The simulation, involving about a dozen volunteers from campus, will see students encounter a range of obstacles and challenges involved in navigating a month in the life of a family living in poverty. Volunteers will serve as business owners, police officers, service providers, government employees and more, and participants will have to make difficult choices about where and how to spend their limited resources. For students in Child and Youth Care, this empathy-building exercise directly links to the kinds of challenges their clients will face in their work. The simulation runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a debrief to follow from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 20, 9 a.m.

Hot breakfast is served

The Lethbridge College Students’ Association will serve up to 300 hot breakfasts to students for Wellness Wednesday. They do this twice a month. Over the course of an academic year, that’s 4,500 breakfasts. Think of them if you need a photo of satisfaction in the shape of a pancake. While you’re in Centre Core enjoying breakfast, you can stop by an information booth by Canadian Blood Services to find out your blood type and learn how to give the gift of life through blood donation. Lethbridge College is a Canadian Blood Services Partner for Life, and CBS will be in Centre Core from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Find out your blood type, have your questions answered and book an appointment. How convenient!

Wednesday, Nov. 20, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Learn about antibiotics at lab open house

Lethbridge College microbiology senior research scientist Dr. Sophie Kernéis and lab technician Leanne DuMontier will give visitors a microscopic view of microbes living all around us (even in our own mouths!) during an open house in the fourth-floor laboratory in the Cousins Building (CB4009). This event is in recognition of World Antibiotic Awareness Week. Kernéis and DuMontier are Lethbridge College’s antibiotics experts. They are conducting the Antibiotic Alberta Plant Project, testing plants native to Alberta in hopes of discovering new antibiotic molecules for medical, agricultural or other uses. An expert panel recently issued a report warning the rise in bacterial infections resistant to treatment is likely to cost Canada 396,000 lives by 2050.

Thursday, Nov. 21, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Learn about antibiotics at information display

Nursing students working with the Lethbridge College Wellness Centre and Health Promotion Coordinator Laura Morden will be in Centre Core answering your questions about antibiotics, infection prevention and antibiotic resistance. They will be sharing information from the World Health Organization as part of World Antibiotic Awareness Week. Be a part of the solution to this worldwide problem. This is the second year Lethbridge College has participated in the WHO campaign on antibiotic awareness. You can learn more from the World Health Organization. For an impressive (and scary) look at how antibiotic resistance can spread, watch a two-minute video of The Evolution of Bacteria on a “Mega-Plate” Petri Dish from Harvard Medical School.

Wednesday, Nov. 20, and Thursday, Nov. 21, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Celebrate our nursing students

Lethbridge College will celebrate National Nursing Students’ Week with snacks and socializing. All students and staff are invited to drop by the second floor of the Technologies Building, outside the nursing labs for cake, popcorn and prizes. Nursing Students’ Week is made even more special this year as Lethbridge College celebrates 50 years of nursing education.

Wednesday, Nov. 20 and Thursday, Nov. 21, 5:30 p.m.

It’s a final exam you can eat

Talk about pressure. Our Culinary Careers students will serve you a five-course menu of their own design, planning and making as their final practical exam of this semester. And you get to experience the deliciousness of their technique and creativity. Doors of the Garden Court dining room open at 5:30 p.m., with seating at 5:45 p.m. for these student testing evenings and diners must reserve in advance by calling 403-320-3230 or on the Garden Court’s Facebook page. As a patron, you’ll experience a one-of-a-kind dinner, knowing you were part of a student’s post-secondary journey.

Learn about sex and porn addiction

Lethbridge College will introduce a new workshop topic to its list of sessions aimed at addictions prevention and support. Sex and Porn Addiction: Myth or Reality will presented by General Studies instructor Marie Damgaard, who is a certified sex addiction therapist. This workshop is for students and staff. This is an introductory workshop for individuals interested in a better understanding of healthy sexuality and identifying the signs of addiction in themselves or others.

Friday, Nov. 22, 1 to 4 p.m.

Mass casualty simulation an opportunity for collaboration

Students from several Lethbridge College programs will get a unique experiential learning opportunity that will test not only what they’ve learned in their respective courses, but how they will work interconnectedly with other disciplines in the work world. SPHERE, the college’s Simulated Patient Health Environment for Research and Education, will hold its third annual fall Simulated Learning Incident for Collaboration and Knowledge (SLICK) event to give students an opportunity to experience the collaboration and chaos that comes with a mass casualty event. Students from the Bachelor of Nursing, Digital Communications and Media, Justice Studies, Practical Nursing and Primary Care Paramedic programs will put their skills to the test in a scenario that will involve many volunteers from other programs. Preparation including moulaging (the art of applying mock injuries) will begin in The Cave at 11  a.m., with the scenario beginning in The Cave at 1 p.m. “Patients” will be transported to the SPHERE hospital by PCP students for treatment by nursing and practical nurse students, and interviewed by Justice Studies students shortly after. Just like in the real world, the media will be on the scene trying to get a story. The SLICK event should conclude around 4 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 22, 6 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 23, 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
