Black History Month begins

Lethbridge College will celebrate Black History Month with a range of activities to give students and staff of all backgrounds opportunities for new experiences, connections and conversations. A committee led by School of Justice Studies instructor Ibrahim Turay, with students, employees and the Lethbridge College Students’ Association, has a range of activities starting today until a closing celebration on Feb. 27. For today’s kickoff, the committee welcomes people of all backgrounds to participate in Cultural Dress Up Day, a chance to wear something to represent your own unique cultural heritage. A brief Black History Month opening ceremony will be held in Centre Core at 11 a.m. Black History Month has been officially recognized in Canada since 1995, to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of people of African and Caribbean descent to the development and cultural diversity of Canada. This is the fourth commemoration of Black History Month at Lethbridge College.

Try something new for Black History Month

All students and staff at Lethbridge College are welcome to pop by the Val Matteotti Gymnasium for basketball or to learn a game called clean touch. Clean touch was a game School of Justice Studies instructor Ibrahim Turay played when he was growing up in Northern Sierra Leone. Thanks to last year’s Black History Month activities, Lethbridge College Students’ Association staffer Tanner Marcer now knows how to play this game, and he’ll be helping to introduce it to others. Clean touch is described as an American football-type game played without a ball.

Be ready to succeed at college

Lethbridge College will hold a new event aimed at building the kinds of connections that will ensure a smooth transition for students coming to college straight from high school. Connecting to College is an opportunity for representatives from southern Alberta K-12 school divisions, and service providers such as Alberta Health Services and others who work with school-aged youth, to visit campus to learn more about the college’s mental wellness supports, academic services and how we can work together to ensure students are ready for their first day at college. The day starts with check-in and breakfast at 9 a.m.; introductions at 9:40 a.m.; and then a Quick Connections session from 10 to 11 a.m. showcasing four key support areas. Between 11 a.m. and noon, our guests will have time for Deep Dives, a chance for facilitated discussion in the support areas of their choice. If you’re interested in a story about college readiness and student success, we’ve got the experts.
