Give What You Can campaign begins 

The Buchanan Library’s fall Food for Fines campaign runs now through Dec. 20. Students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members are invited to Give What You Can, by making a donation of nonperishable food at the library. If you have outstanding overdue fees, making a donation may be a way to have those fines forgiven. Some restrictions apply. Visit the library for details. All donations will go to the Lethbridge College Students’ Association food bank, which is experiencing high demand.

Artwork by college students, alumni and faculty on exhibit all month 

Artwork by students, alumni and faculty from the college’s Fashion Design and Sustainable Production program and the University of Lethbridge drama department will be featured in Mapping the Body: Wearing the Other, an exhibit in The Gallery at Casa, 230 8 St. S., Lethbridge. The exhibit, co-curated by instructor Brenda Brandley, runs through Dec. 21. The project began in 2016 as a collaboration between the college and university. The project focuses on contemporary perspectives of the body through a variety of mediums, immersing in creative and critical representations. This exhibition is the third and final instalment and presents the most exciting pieces from the past two exhibits plus new innovative pieces. 

 

Monday, Dec. 3 

Last day to donate used books 

This is the final day to donate gently used books to a book sale being organized by faculty from the Centre of Health and Wellness. The books are being collected at the Buchanan Library and will be sold from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 in The Cave. Money raised will go to the Ron MacDonald Emergency Fund, for students at high risk of dropping out due to financial pressures. Since 2004, the emergency fund has awarded just over $80,000 to students in need, giving them continued access to education.

Lethbridge College Christmas store open all week 

The Lethbridge College Christmas Store will be in the Richardson Oilseed Room (CE1305) this week, giving students a chance to buy affordable gifts for friends and family. In addition to the store, there’s a silent auction running all week, and a bake sale on Wednesday, Dec. 5. All proceeds from the store go directly to students in the form of Lethbridge College gift cards which they can use to pay for textbooks, tuition or meals in the food court. Last year’s Christmas store raised more than $4,500. Organized by the Bookstore, Registration/Records team and the Lethbridge College Students’ Association, the store is stocked with donations of new or gently used items from supporters across campus.

Massage Clinic supports LSCA food bank 

The Student Massage Therapy Clinic will hold a special college night for staff and students. Massages will be free in return for a donation of a nonperishable food donation to the Lethbridge College Students’ Association Food Bank. The food bank is experiencing high demand so every donation makes a positive difference. The clinic closes for this terms on Thursday, Dec. 6. The clinic is an important part of the Massage Therapy program, giving students opportunities to provide quality professional massages at special rates ($20 for 30 minutes, up to $45 for 90 minutes).

Holiday fun in Centre Core 

Lethbridge College gets into the swing of the holidays with an event for students and staff in Centre Core. Enjoy a pancake breakfast, ornament decorating, games, prizes, movies and popcorn. The Bookstore will hold a pop-up sale and the Lethbridge College Students’ Association will have an activity table and be accepting donations to the LCSA Food Bank. Wear you ugliest holiday sweater, please!

College offers suicide prevention training 

Lethbridge College offers several opportunities each year for students and staff to take part in Question. Persuade. Refer. (QPR) training. The goal of this program is to teach participants to recognize the warning signs, clues and suicidal communications of people in trouble and gain skills to act to prevent a possible tragedy. This one-hour training provides introductory-level suicide prevention training and a certificate of participation to those who complete the session. This is a free service for Lethbridge College community members. Please register in advance online. If you’re looking for expertise on suicide prevention at what can be a difficult time of year, we have it.

Mediterranean buffet for lunch in the Garden Court

LCSA children’s skating party hits the ice 

The Lethbridge College Students’ Association will host its annual children’s Christmas skating party from 4:30 to 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday Dec 5 at the Enmax Centre. There will be snacks, pizza, grab bags for kids, plenty of mascots and, of course, Santa Claus himself. So bring your skates and have some fun. Sign up at the Campus Recreation office (CE1350) or by calling ext. 5303.  

 

Thursday, Dec. 6, 9 a.m. while supplies last 

Breaking bread one more time 

The kiosk in Centre Core will be the setting for the last COBS Bread Bakery give away of 2018. The bakery donates bread and treats to the Lethbridge College Students’ Association Food Bank. Some of the supply is sold for donations, which also support the food bank. Thank you to COBS for all the support for our students this year.

Last class bash before finals week 

The Lethbridge College Students’ Association will hold a Last Class Bash in The Cave, inviting students out for a bit of fun before finals. Aside from fun, look for lots of free food to help tide over our students.

Book sale and pub night 

The Employee Engagement Committee’s final Pub Night of 2018 will include a used book sale. Staff can pop by The Cave for a beverage and snack, and shop for books donated by colleagues. Lethbridge College musicians will be sharing their talents too. Money raised at the book sale will go to the Ron MacDonald Emergency Fund, for students at high risk of dropping out due to financial pressures. Proceeds from pub nights go to the Lethbridge College Students’ Association clubs.

Multimedia production students showcase their VR skills 

Students in Lethbridge College’s Multimedia Production program will hold their third annual Virtual Reality Games Open House in TE3217. Students will showcase the VR games they’ve developed this semester at the event called The Reality of VR. Students learned a new application, planned and developed their game, conducted user tests and are ready to share their efforts.
