Food for Fines campaign continues

If you have overdue books or other materials from the Lethbridge College Buchanan Library, now’s the time to return them. Donate a nonperishable food item at the library and you can have outstanding overdue fines forgiven (some restrictions apply) in this 30th iteration of Food for Fines. Not only will you be clearing your slate, but you’ll be helping the Lethbridge College Students’ Association Food Bank to meet the needs of students now and into the new year. This year’s Food for Fines theme is SOS, Support Our Students, Stock Our Shelves. Even if you don’t have overdue materials, pop by with a donation and you know your gift will be going directly to students.

LC Christmas Store opens for our students

What happens when the Bookstore, Registration/Records team and Lethbridge College Students’ Association team up? Holiday magic in support of Lethbridge College students. The partners will open the annual LC Christmas Store for three days this week. The store is stocked with items donated by people across campus, giving students an opportunity to do low-cost shopping for family and friends. Students can browse the store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Volunteers will be baking for a bake sale that starts at 11 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Students and staff can also browse a silent auction outside the store. The store is located in the Richardson Oilseed Room (CE1305). The money raised through the store, bake sale and auction all goes back to students in the form of college gift cards that can be used to pay for textbooks, tuition or meals in our Food Court. It’s a feel-good feature for the holidays. Last year’s event raised $3,000.

Lethbridge ARCHES will provide overdose prevention and Naloxone training on Lethbridge College’s campus. These sessions are available several times throughout the academic year, and are open to the public, college students and employees. This is part of a harm reduction initiative by Alberta Health Services. You’ll leave this session with awareness of ARCHES services, harm reduction strategies and the skills to detect an overdose from an opiod and to respond. Those who complete the training will receive certification they can share on their resume. Please register in advance online. If you can’t attend Dec. 5, other sessions are planned Feb. 11 and April 2. To our partners in media, we invite you to register and attend one of these sessions, not for a story, but for your own awareness and education. As individuals who are out and about in the community every single day, this kind of training could well save a life.
