How do online learners access their courses?
Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) used by Lethbridge College. Think of this as something like a website where your instructor can distribute course materials and announcements, post and collect assignments, record grades, facilitate course discussions, and much more. The good news is that you're already using Canvas! This orientation has been developed using Canvas to give you the opportunity to explore some of the basic features this system offers before your classes begin. The following video will show you how to get started using Canvas for the first time.
Is your technology compatible?
Canvas does have some recommendations for screen resolution, operating system, mobile device operating systems, computer specifications, and internet speed, which can be found in the Canvas Community. An internet search will usually produce easy instructions on how to determine the operating system and specifications for your computer or mobile device. However, each specific course may include supplemental resources that require more resources. If so, your instructor will communicate this at the beginning of the term.
There are a variety of web browsers available for download on any computer, but we recommend the use of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox to optimize your experience interacting with our online courses. For detailed information on all browsers that are supported by Canvas, visit this Canvas Community Page.
As a student at Lethbridge College, you will have free licensing for Microsoft Office 365, which is a suite of several different softwares. Instructions on how to download them to your device is available on the ITS webpage.
Pdf files are commonly used in online courses. To open these files, you will require a pdf reading program. While there are several pdf readers available for download on the internet, we would recommend the Adobe Acrobat DC free download.
As a student at Lethbridge College, you will be provided with a Lethbridge College email account. It is imperative that you use this account on a regular basis. You should have received information regarding this account with the confirmation of application.
