**NOTE: This workshop is for Lethbridge College members only.**

Welcome! Yoga is a wonderful tradition that can help with many ailments including stress, anxiety and depression. These are the main areas that we hope to focus our practice on in this group. The first principle of yoga is “Ahimsa” which means non-harming. This means we treat our body and minds gently and respectfully as we participate in yoga. We don’t try to force the mind or body to go into directions that are unhealthy for it. Yoga can be a very powerful experience and it’s important to let your instructor know of any discomforts (physical or emotional) that may arise during your practice.

This group will take place on WEDNESDAYS from 4:30-6:00 in TE1202 (Sunflower Room), starting January 23- March 13.

The Goals For This Group Are:

* To develop a type of practice that works for you and that you will take into “everyday life”.

* To reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety

* To build community

* Bring a sense of “Ahimsa” or non-harming into our thoughts and beings

What This Group Will Look Like:

We will be practicing a Himilayan model of yoga. Classes will include breathing exercises, “asanas” or postures in which we gently and mindfully move the body into various positions, relaxation, meditation and chanting.

Following the yoga and meditation portion of each class we will have a focused discussion for approximately 15 minutes depending on the group. Each week we will learn therapeutic tools from the fields of psychology and yoga philosophy to help lessen symptoms of anxiety and depression. Part of this time will be educational but part of it will be an opportunity for students to share their experiences and provide feedback and support to one another. Some of the content may be challenging for you at times, but we ask that all participants be respectful of themselves and others as we work through this journey.

The more we put the tools we discuss to use, the more effective they will be in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. We therefore ask participants to commit to a minimum of 15 minutes a day of practice and reflection.

What to Bring:

  • You can bring a yoga matt if you have one (there will be mats supplied if you do not have one)
  • Comfortable clothing
