COR-1180 Youth in the Justice System (3 Credits) This course explores the complex relationship between family and social conditions and antisocial behaviour in young people. Included are: developmental theories and the role of modeling; risk and protective factors for criminal behaviour; an analysis of specific behaviours including gang membership, substance abuse, prostitution, and violent crime; and the importance of prevention and early intervention. Statistical trends and patterns, and the role of media are discussed. The evolution of Canadian law leading up to the Youth Criminal Justice Act as a response to crime by young people is examined. Specific sections of the Youth Criminal Justice Act will be addressed. Not available for supplemental.Instruction (3.0)Equivalent to COR-180.
