Professional Experience

Teaching Experience

Dr. Hanna first fell in love with inspiring others to appreciate the intricacies of nature and power of the scientific method as a teaching assistant early in his career.  His formal teaching career started at his alma mater (Fleming College) where he taught technical courses in ornithology, research design and data analysis, vertebrate biology, and wildlife field techniques.  Concurrently, he lectured a 3rd-year wildlife ecology and management course at Western University.  In 2015, Dr. Hanna joined the faculty at Portage College to develop and teach new courses in fisheries and wildlife science in the Natural Resources Technology program.  Most recently, he joined the School of Environmental Sciences at Lethbridge College in 2018.  As a wildlife biologist, Dr. Hanna currently teaches second-year Principles of Wildlife Biology, third-year Wildlife Field Techniques, fourth-year Population Ecology and Management, fourth-year Species at Risk Management and fourth-year Senior Project I and II; in addition, he advises several students leading research projects. He is also a member of the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Lethbridge where he advises a master’s student studying perceptions towards urban wildlife. Beyond academia, Dr. Hanna also leads nature-related workshops and field tours with environmental NGOs.

Industry Work

Dr. Hanna has worked with government and non-government agencies domestically and abroad on a variety of wildlife conservation projects. He has also consulted on projects throughout western Canada, including LNG seismic in northeastern BC, gas plants along the Pacific Coast, pipelines in the prairies, nutrient management in the Great Lakes, invasive species management, and caribou management in the far north. Most recently, as Principal/Ecologist of Ponderosa Environmental Consulting, he manages Operation Grassland Community, a stewardship-focused grassland species at risk conservation program in southeastern Alberta.  Dr. Hanna has also served as an expert witness on cases relating to wildlife management.

Research

Dr. Hanna’s research interests include a diversity of fish and wildlife species and ecosystems throughout North America. All wild species requiring targeted conservation or management are of interest.  From migratory birds to boreal and tundra caribou to urban deer, he uses scientific knowledge and analytical skills to produce information sought after by decision-makers and to generate new knowledge. Recently, Dr. Hanna has been working to establish a wildlife tooth ageing lab at Lethbridge College. Once operational, the lab will be the first of its kind in Canada and offer invaluable analytical services to Canadian wildlife researchers and managers and beyond.
